Sochi was founded in 1896 but was first a Russian outpost from 1838. It became a town in 1917. Sochi sits at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains between the rivers Mamaika and Kudepsta. The Black Sea was originally called the Inhospitable Sea (Pontos Axeinos) before colonization by the Greeks, at which point it was the Hospitable Sea (Euxeinos Pontos).
