Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Don't Leave Me This Way' was a hit for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes in 1975, but was an even bigger hit in the USA the following year for which female singer?

Answer: Thelma Houston

A much recorded song, 'Don't Leave Me This Way' charted for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes at number three on the US Billboard Disco chart. Thelma Houston's version reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1976, although it managed only number thirteen on the UK Singles Chart.

The original version did rather better in the UK, getting to number five in 1977. The song then hit the charts for The Communards in 1986, reaching number one in the UK Singles Chart and also managing number one on the US Hot Dance Club chart.
2. 'Baby, Come Back' was written by Eddy Grant and recorded by him in 1965 when he was a member of which band?

Answer: The Equals

Eddy was born in Guyana and came to England when his parents settled in London. He formed The Equals in 1965 and 'Baby, Come Back' was released in 1966. It sold well in continental Europe but did nothing in the UK until a second release in 1968, making the top of the UK Singles chart.

The song had a second spell at number one in 1994 for Pato Banton. Eddy Grant had a successful solo career after leaving The Equals, with 'I Don't Wanna Dance' and 'Electric Avenue' among his hit recordings.
3. 'She would never be free while I was around' are lyrics from which Beatles song about a girlfriend leaving?

Answer: Ticket to Ride

'I think I'm gonna be sad, I think it's today. The girl that's driving me mad is going away' are the opening lines, but that would have been just too easy. 'Ticket to Ride' came out in 1965 and appeared on the album 'Help!'. It was mainly composed by John Lennon, who sang the lead vocals, and (unsurprisingly) reached the number one position on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles chart.
4. 'Come Back and Stay' was written by Jack Lee and released by him in 1981. Which British singer had chart success with the song two years later, having recorded it for his album 'No Parlez'?

Answer: Paul Young

Paul Young began his career as the singer in various bands, including Q-Tips. He branched out as a solo artist in 1982 and his first chart success came with a cover of Marvin Gaye's song 'Wherever I Lay my Hat (That's My Home)' in 1983. 'Come Back and Stay' quickly followed and a re-release of an earlier record, 'Love of the Common People', also made the charts. Young has continued to record and perform into the early years of the twenty-first century. Jack Lee, the writer of 'Come Back and Stay' also wrote 'Hanging on the Telephone', one of Blondie's biggest hits.
5. Bill Withers sang about missing his girl in his 1971 hit. What was its title?

Answer: Ain't No Sunshine

The song was Bill's first big hit, getting as high as number three on the US Billboard Hot 100, although it managed only number forty on the UK Singles Chart. He followed it up with an even bigger hit with 'Lean on Me' in 1972 and Withers's other hits include 'Lovely Day' (1977) and 'Just the Two of Us' (1981). 'Ain't No Sunshine' is distinctive for its repetition of the phrase 'I know' in the middle of the song, while 'Lovely Day' has Bill sustaining the same note for nearly twenty seconds.
6. 'Walk Right Back' was a 1961 hit for which duo?

Answer: The Everly Brothers

'I want you to tell me why you walked out on me; I'm so lonesome every day' are the opening lines of the song, as the singer pleads with his girl to 'walk right back' into his life. The song did well for the brothers, reaching the top ten in the singles charts of both the USA and UK. Other artists to have recorded it include Harry Nilsson, Perry Como and Anne Murray.
7. Which band recorded the haunting hit 'If You Leave Me Now'?

Answer: Chicago

'If you leave me now; you'll take away the biggest part of me' are the opening lines of the song, which was written and sung by Chicago's lead singer of the time, Peter Cetera. The song was a huge success for the band, reaching the number one spot in many countries around the world in 1976. Cetera left the band in 1985 and went on to have solo success, notably with 'Glory of Love' in 1986.
8. A big hit in 1979, 'Please Don't Go' was recorded by which of these bands?

Answer: KC and the Sunshine Band

The band were better known for their disco style, with hits including 'That's the Way (I Like It)' and 'Give it Up', so 'Please Don't Go' was something of a departure for them. The song did well, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and number three on the UK Singles Chart, and reaching the top ten in several other countries.

The band was named for their lead singer, Harry Wayne Casey (i.e. KC) and their home state of Florida gave them the Sunshine element.
9. The Four Seasons sang 'you say you're gonna go and call it quits' in which of these songs?

Answer: Let's Hang On!

All of the songs listed were hits for Frankie Valli and the band, and could fit the theme of the quiz, but the lyrics quoted are from 'Let's Hang On!'. The chorus is 'Let's hang on to what we've got; don't let go girl, we've got a lot; got a lot of love between us; hang on, hang on, hang on; to what we've got'.

It was just one of many top ten hits for the group, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and number four on the UK Singles Chart, both in 1965.
10. 'Against All Odds' was written and performed by which British singer?

Answer: Phil Collins

The full title includes the words 'Take a Look at Me Now' in brackets, and the song was written in 1984 for the film of the same name, starring Rachel Ward and Jeff Bridges. The singer pleads for his lover to turn around and come back to him, while acknowledging that it is 'against the odds' that she will do so.

The song was a big success for Collins, hitting the top spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the UK Singles chart.
