The Tongass Forest is the largest forest located in the United States. One of the many things that can be seen here is the Etolin Canoe. Located on the island of Etolin, the Etolin Canoe is an unfinished dugout canoe that was started somewhere between 1880-1920.

Although it is located in Alaska, Tongass National Forest includes the greatest tracts of temperate rainforest located outside of tropical areas. Conversely, this magnificent wilderness is also home to hundreds of glaciers!

A visit to Kodiak Island, the largest island in the archipelago, will enable a visitor to see a wild menagerie of fox, otter, deer, elk, reindeer, and multiple bird species.

Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America, is located in the Denali National Park. Denali is the name given to the mountain by the Koyukon Athabaskan peoples who live in the area. Denali National Park is six million acres of solitude and tranquility.

A daytrip to see the Eklutna Village Historical Park will allow you to see the unusual Eklutna Village cemetery. This area of Alaska has a high population of Orthodox Christians from Russia. The cemetery has brightly colored burial spirit boxes that look somewhat like birdhouses.

The lovely St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church can be seen here. There park is also home to the ruins of an Athabascan Indian settlement that dates to the mid-17th century. The village of Eklutna is home to approximately 75 full time residents.

The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show is one of the most popular cultural events in Alaska. It is held near the boat docks and is a common point for Alaskan cruise ships to stop for a visit. When the lumberjacks are in battle, you can hear the audience cheering all through town.

This hour long show features speed-climbing, sawing competitions, log rolling, and wood chopping. These are all activities that real loggers had to engage in before the advent of the chain saw. There are three to four shows daily, depending on how many cruise ships are in dock.

When visiting the island of Kodiak, this unassuming frame structure is a must-see.
