Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which two bodies of water does the Bosphorus connect?

Answer: The Marmara Sea and the Black Sea

The Black Sea is at the north end and the Marmara is in the south. The Bosphorus also lies between two continents: Asia and Europe.
2. How long is the Istanbul strait approximately?

Answer: 30 km

The width is 3700 m maximum and 700 m minimum. The depth changes from 36 to 124 m.
3. If you look at satellite images, what letter does the Bosphorus look like?

Answer: S

The S shape is one of the reasons why it is very difficult to navigate through the Bosphorus. Sometimes ships that cannot make the right turns crash into buildings surrounding the coastline of the Bosphorus.
4. What type of bridge is the Bosphorus Bridge located between Ortakoy and Beylerbeyi?

Answer: Suspension bridge

When the Bosphorus bridge was completed it was the fourth biggest suspension bridge in the world. But this was not the first time people were able to cross the strait without sailing. In 511 BC, Persian King Darius The Great made a floating bridge by placing all the ships in his navy side by side and allowed his army of 700,000 people to cross the strait on foot.
5. A theory about the formation of the Bosphorus states that about 7000 years ago the water level in the Mediterrenean rose so high that water started to flow through a valley (the Bosphorus) towards a fresh water lake (The Black Sea). Which is not part of this theory?

Answer: Global warming will possibly cause a similar flood in the second half of the 21st century

The theory was put forward by William Ryan and Walter Pitman from the University of Columbia in 1998. The findings of underwater surveyors suggest an ancient coastline at a depth of 450 ft. Dr Robert Ballard, who led the research team, has participated in 120 deep-sea expeditions and is a well-known oceanographer who found the Titanic and other sunken ships of the 1900s.
6. Which of these sea animals could be found in the Bosphorus in the recent past but not today?

Answer: Swordfish

The Bosphorus is still inhabited by dolphins. Seals and whales have never been a part of the wildlife in the strait. Swordfish would use the strait to travel from the Aegean to the Marmara and then the Black Sea. This migration used to be from May until September, when they returned to the warmer seas.

After people started to hunt them with harpoons in the 1930s, their populations rapidly decreased. They have been extinct in the area since the 1970s.
7. "Yali" is the Turkish word used for waterfront mansions. Which one is not a fact about them?

Answer: Nearly all the "yalis" are used as museums.

Almost all the mansions are inhabited by the richest people in Turkey. Some are properties of foreign embassies but only a handful are open to visitors. If you want to see the marvellous beauty of these buildings, you could take a boat tour along the strait.
8. When was the first bridge over the Bosphorus completed?

Answer: 1973

The first bridge over the Bosphorus was completed in three years and opened in 1973. The second one was completed in 1988.
9. Despite the strong currents and the relatively mild climate of Istanbul, the sea in the Bosphorus has frozen several times throughout history, even during the 20th century.

Answer: True

The last time the sea in the Bosphorus froze was in 1954 when people were able to cross from one side of the strait to the other walking on the huge pieces of ice.
10. What does the Greek word "Bosporos" mean?

Answer: The Cow Strait

According to one legend, Zeus falls in love with a beautiful princess named Io. When his wife Hera learns about this, she casts a spell and turns Io into a cow. When Zeus tries to save his lover, Hera sends a fly to annoy Io. Io, still looking like a cow, escapes to Rumelia (the Euorepean part of today's Turkey) and when this is not enough, crosses the strait to escape the irritating fly.

Hence the name "Bosphorus".
