Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Everyone has heard of kissing the famous Blarney Stone. In which county is Blarney Castle, home of the stone?

Answer: Cork

Kissing this stone is reputed to give loquacity or "the gift of the gab". The stone is at the top of one of the castle walls, to kiss it requires quite a head for heights.
2. What would you do with a "crubeen"?

Answer: Eat it

Crubeens are pigs feet. They are boiled and served hot or cold. They look disgusting. According to the males in this house, they "go down a bomb" i.e are the perfect accompaniment, to a pint of stout late on Saturday night.
3. What colour is Connemara marble?

Answer: Green

This is used in jewellery. The heart, symbol of love in the "claddagh ring", is often made of this green marble.
4. Off what Irish county can you find the Aran Islands?

Answer: Galway

There are three main islands. Gaelic is the first language there. Tourism and fishing are the main sources of income. You really can smell turf fires there and escape from pressure.
5. What material is used to make the finest "bodhrans", or Irish drum?

Answer: Goat skin

The bodhran is a handheld drum. The skin is stretched and secured on a wooden band. It is played with a double headed tipper called a "cipin". When it's played, you cannot stop your feet tapping out the beat.
6. What is "a black velvet" in Ireland?

Answer: A drink

It is a drink made of Guinness and champagne. Not to be confused with Black Velvet (note capitals) of an Irish group.
7. The letters "DUN" are frequently found in Irish placenames. What do they mean?

Answer: Fort

Dun goes back to Celtic times and even before, when protection was needed in case of cattle raids by neighbouring clans. Dun Aengus on the Aran Islands has survived as a promontory fort, but in most cases only the name survives.
8. What would an Irish person do with a "crios"?

Answer: Wear it

A crios is a belt so it would be worn. "M'ainm ar crios" is seen as a road sign sometimes in Ireland, it means don't forget to put on your seatbelt.
9. Michael Flatley and Jean Butler (among others), starred in an extravaganza of Irish music and dance. Can you name the show?

Answer: River Dance

This was originally made as a slot in the Eurovision Song Contest to fill the time between the end of the songs and the beginning of the voting. It was hugely popular and expanded into a full show. Later sequels were made.
10. Finally what is the name of the new monument begun in Dublin for the millennium and completed in 2003?

Answer: Spire

It's officially called the Spire but Dubliners have re-christened it the Spike, as it is so narrow. It is 120 metres tall.
