Answer: Clingman's Dome

Clingman's Dome is 6,643 feet and overlooks the great state of Tennessee. It is located on the crest of the eastern Appalachians, otherwise known as the "Smokies".
2. Which Tennessee city would you find at the confluence of the Mississippi and Wolf Rivers?

Answer: Memphis

Nashville is known for country music and publishing. It is the state capital and located in the central basin. The Tennessee Titans (NFL) play football there. The Memphis Grizzlies (NBA) play basketball in the city named after the one in Egypt. The Wolf River is just over 100 miles long and empties into the much larger Mississippi at Memphis. Knoxville and Chattanooga are the third and fourth major cities.

Named after a Chickasaw Indian Chief, Reelfoot was formed during an earthquake of the New Madrid faultline in late 1814. The earthquake was so intense that it rang church bells in Philadelphia and the Mississippi River ran backwards for two weeks.

The Cumberland Plateau or Cumberland Mountains sit around 4000 feet in elevation. Cherokee is the origin of proper name. The largest river in the central basin is also called Cumberland.

It is called Sequatchie. Why? It was named by the Cherokee. The Sequatchie River formed this valley.

Lookout Mountain has many features including a national battlefield, civil war cemetery, and Ruby Falls. You can see seven states from Rock City. You can ride the steepest incline in the world. You can stop at a service station and drink Double Cola. The minor league baseball team is the Chatanooga Lookouts.

Tennessee's main rivers are the Tennessee, Cumberland and Mississippi. Several smaller rivers play as tributaries into these larger ones. Most of the rivers are named from native American derivations. The eastern rivers are named from Cherokee. The western rivers are named primarily after animals and are Chickasaw in origin.

The Holston comes out of Virginia. The French Broad comes out of North Carolina. The name Tennessee comes from the Cherokee word Tanasi which was where their main tribe lived before white man arrived and took over. The place right below the Tennessee was settled by James White and named Knoxville after the first Secretary of War Henry Knox. Andrew Jackson and the first state convention chose the name Tennessee for the state and the river.

The "Vol Navy" can be seen on this river on football Saturday in the fall. About one hundred boats full of UT football fans travel up and down the river to get to Neyland Stadium to watch their Tennessee Vols (NCAA).
