Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Euchre is a favorite card game in northern New York. If spades is trump, what is the highest card and what is it called?

Answer: The Jack of Spades, called the Right Bauer

Euchre is a trumping card game originating in Germany. The word euchre means "farmer", and the game is thought to originate in rural areas. You'll find euchre players in RUNY, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Canada (and some other places no doubt).
2. What is a peavey?

Answer: A pole with a hook used to roll logs

The peavey is a lumberman's lever that has a pivoting hooked arm and metal spike at one end - also called a cant dog. It's used to roll logs onto a sawbuck or a bobsled.
3. What is a "honey wagon"?

Answer: A manure spreader

Manure fertilizes the fields to grow hay and corn to feed the cows to make manure. Circle of life, right?
4. Where do the Orangemen play?

Answer: The Carrier Dome, in Syracuse

The Carrier Dome isn't air conditioned, even though it was built by the Carrier (air conditioner) Corporation. You see, it doesn't need air conditioning, because it's always full of fans. Fans, get it?
5. What is sugar snow?

Answer: Snow that falls during maple sugaring season

Sugar snow is looked upon favorably, because it's an indicator of warm days and cold nights - perfect weather for maple trees to produce sap. The snow also keeps the ground cooler during the spring thaw, extending the sugaring season.
6. What does the Blue Line signify?

Answer: The boundary of the Adirondack Park

The Adirondack Park encloses the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. Lake Placid, home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, lies inside "the blue line".
By the way, West Point graduates are members of the "Long Gray Line".
7. What is the propellant of choice for a potato gun?

Answer: Hair spray

A potato gun uses hairspray to shoot a spud through a short length of PVC pipe. Potatoes have been known to fly upwards of 600 feet.
8. What is a "wheeler"?

Answer: An all-terrain-vehicle; short for "4-wheeler"

Some people up north also call a snowmobile a "sheener" - short for snow machine.
9. What does an orange triangle on the back of a wagon signify?

Answer: Slow moving vehicle

There are a lot of horse-drawn vehicles (used mostly by the Amish) in New York, but the triangle can also be found on tractors and motorized vehicles (like the ubiquitous manure spreader).
10. When is black fly season?

Answer: Mid-May through June

Black flies are the size of a grain of rice and their bites raise infernally itchy welts. Savvy travellers know better than to visit the Adirondacks during black fly season, which usually runs from mid-May through June.
