Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many Finger Lakes are there?

Answer: 11

The eleven Finger Lakes are Conesus, Hemlock, Candice, Honeoye, Canandaigua, Keuka, Seneca, Cayuga, Owasco, Skaneateles, and Otisco.
All of the Finger Lakes were carved out by glaciers after the Ice Age, which makes them look long, narrow, and similar to fingers.
2. Geneva and Watkins Glen lay at the ends of which lake?

Answer: Seneca

Geneva is at the north of Seneca Lake and Watkins Glen is at the south. Watkins Glen is also home to the famous NASCAR track. Seneca lake got its name from one of the branches of the Iroquois. Seneca lake is so deep that the very bottom of it is below sea level making it the second deepest lake in New York and the deepest of the Finger Lakes. Seneca lake is also called the trout capital of the world and the site of the unexplained phenomenon, the Guns of Seneca.
3. What Finger Lake is farthest west?

Answer: Conesus

Most people do not consider Conesus, Hemlock, Candice, and Honeoye Finger Lakes because of they are so small, although they technically are. In the town of Geneseo adjacent to Conesus Lake there is a huge salt mine.
4. Ithaca is at the end of which lake?

Answer: Cayuga

Ithaca is just to the south of Cayuga Lake. Like Seneca, Cayuga also came from one of the five branches of the Iroquois. Ithaca is also home to Cornell College and several spectacular waterfalls. Cayuga Lake is the longest of the Finger Lakes.
5. Which Finger Lake is farthest east?

Answer: Otisco

Onondaga is not a Finger Lake. However if it were, it would be the right answer. As in Question 3, some people don't think Otisco, Skaneateles, and Owasco are Finger Lakes because of their size; again, they technically are. Otisco Lake is the only Finger Lake to be partly man-made.
6. The Finger Lakes are south of which Great Lake?

Answer: Ontario

While the Finger Lakes are east of Erie they are south of Ontario. Ontario and Erie were also carved out by a glaciers.
7. Lamoka Lake and Waneta Lake are between which two Finger Lakes?

Answer: Seneca & Keuka

Waneta Lake is just south of the town of Keuka and Lamoka Lake is just north of the town of Bradford. They are connected by a small stream. Lamoka Lake is one of three lakes in the area to have an island.
8. Which Interstate runs to the east of the Finger Lakes?

Answer: Interstate 81

Answer: Interstate 390

Interstate 390 runs from Rochester down towards Corning but ends around the town of Bath.
10. How many towns in the Finger Lakes Region have the same name as a lake?

Answer: 10
