Answer: Venice

Venice is one of the most famous of Italian cities due to its series of canals. Many of these famous buildings have been slowly sinking into the lagoon for years, and there have been a number of different proposals to protect the remaining buildings from flood damage.

Florence is famous for its art galleries and is home to the Statue of David. Verona is famous as the home of 'Romeo and Juliet'. Vicenza is also a city in Italy.

Lake Como is located near Milan. George Clooney has owned at least two villas on the lake, adding to the attraction of this area.

Lake Lucerne is a famous lake in Switzerland and the home of two famous bridges. Lake Maggiore and Lake Lugano are both part of the Italian Lake region.

The Blue Grotto is one of the most famous sites in this part of Italy. The only way that you can enter it is on a calm day, and by lying flat on the floor of a row boat.

Sicily is a famous island and is located near the 'toe' of the 'boot' of Italy. Sardinia is the second largest island in Italy (after Sicily) while Crete is famous as being the home of the minotaur.

The capital of Switzerland is Bern, and is full of beautiful buildings. The old town centre is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. It also appears in the world's top ten cities for quality of life.

Jura is a region in Switzerland, while Zurich is the largest town in Switzerland. Lake Geneva is one of the largest lakes in Western Europe.

The two wooden bridges of Lucerne are world-famous. Sadly, Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge) was damaged by fire in 1993. Some of the pictures that are painted inside the bridge were badly damaged or destroyed by the fire. Spreuerbrücke (Mill Bridge) also has a series of paintings inside depicting the 'Dance of Death'.

Geneva is on the shores of Lake Geneva and home to the Red Cross Museum. Zurich is famous as a world banking capital, while Basle is the third largest town in Switzerland.

The old centre of Salzburg was listed by UNESCO in 1997. During Christmas, a number of different puppets are displayed on the buildings as part of the festivities. Salzburg is named after a precious natural commodity - Salt.

Vienna was the centre of the Austro-Hungarian empire for many years. There are a number of culinary delights to be found here, including the famous Wiener Schnitzel. Melange coffee (covered in whipped cream) is particularly nice after a day at the Christmas markets.

Innsbruck means 'bridge over the River Inn'. The town became the capital of the Tyrol region in 1429, and Maximilian I made his home here for a number of years. Innsbruck has a number of beautiful old churches and buildings and is a popular tourist spot.

Granada is home to many beautiful buildings. Sadly the Alhambra was neglected for several centuries and parts fell into ruins. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a popular tourist attraction. Ferdinand and Isabella are known as the 'Catholic Monarchs' and were staunch supporters of the Spanish Inquisition. The year 1492 was eventful- they won the Granada War, supported Christopher Columbus in his voyage of exploration and issued a proclamation to expel the Jewish population from Spain.

Seville is another town with a strong Moorish history in southern Spain, Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and Valencia is another famous Spanish town.

Seville is located in southern Spain and has a Mediterranean climate. It was a thriving port town in the 16th century, particularly as it was the port where all goods from the 'New World' were unloaded. It is the fourth largest city in Spain.

Madrid is the capital of Spain, Porto is a popular seaside resort in Portugal and Valencia is another popular town in Spain.
