The city of Duluth was a major hub for Norwegian immigration. Its location on Lake Superior gave Norwegian fisherman consistent work. In 1870, there were a recorded 242 Norwegians in Duluth. By 1900 this number was 7,500.

Mendota is located in Dakota County, Minnesota. Fort Snelling State Park is close by.

In around 1830, Joseph Godfrey was born into slavery. After suffering at the hands of his slave masters, he escaped and sought refuge among the Dakota. He married a daughter of Wahpa Duta (or "Red Leaf") in 1857. During the 1862 Dakota war, Dakota warriors nicknamed Godfrey "Atokte," which means "slayer of many" though Godfrey never professed to killing anyone. There are conflicting accounts of how involved in the conflict he was.

The Battle of Wood Lake was where Godfrey and his fellow combatants, about 1,000 Dakota, surrendered. Attempting to avoid execution, Godfrey testified against the Dakota, resulting in many Dakota warriors being hung. Godfrey was imprisoned in Camp McClellan, Davenport, Iowa. He served three years of his sentence and was free by 1866. He died of natural causes in 1909.
