Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Ugandan flag was adopted in October of 1962. Two other flags had been made previous to the newest flag of Uganda. What happened on the ninth of the month that caused the flag to change design?

Answer: Uganda gained independence

The first flag of Uganda had the Union Jack in the top left corner, with the national symbol of Uganda in the middle right. It was adopted in 1914 and continued until March 1962. In March of that year, a new flag was adopted, with two large green vertical bars on either side, two thin yellow bars next to that, and the rest being blue.

In the blue bar was the national symbol. In October 1962, the flag changed once more, due to Ugandan independence. The newer flag had six stripes: two black, two yellow, and two red.

In the middle of the two inner stripes was the national symbol, encircled in a white disk.
2. Uganda's national symbol is a bird, known for its gentle nature. It is also featured on the Coat of Arms and on military badges. Which bird might this be?

Answer: Grey Crowned Crane

The grey crowned crane is a crane in the Gruidae family. There are two subspecies of this crane: the South African crowned crane and the East African crested crane. In Uganda, the East African crested crane is more prevalent, since Uganda is in, well, East Africa.

The grey crowned cranes can be found as far north, however, as southern Sahara, though they prefer much wetter environments.
3. The flag of Uganda features six stripes. The top stripe is black, the second is yellow, the third is red, and it is then repeated. The three colors mean something to Ugandans; what do the black, yellow, and red stripes mean, respectively?

Answer: People, Sunshine, Brotherhood

The black stripes represent the African people. The yellow represents the sunshine prevalent in Africa. The red stripe represents brotherhood. The red means blood, and it is believed by some that all Africans are connected through blood, like a brotherhood.
4. The currency code for Uganda is UGX. But that is only the code; what is the actual Ugandan currency called?

Answer: Shilling

The USh, or Ugandan Shilling, is the national currency of Uganda. The shilling was once divided into 100 cents, but in 1987 cents were no longer used. Both coins and bills are issued, each with a different amount of shillings. Coins include the rare 10 shilling coin, along with the 50, 100, 200, and 500 shilling pieces, and bills include the 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, and 50,000 shilling bills.
5. If you know which country Uganda gained independence from, you should be able to answer this question. Which side of the street do Ugandans drive on?

Answer: Left

Uganda gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1962. Therefore, they have adopted much of the United Kingdom lifestyle. Since those in the UK drive on the left side of the road, with a right side steering wheel, it is only natural that those with cars in Uganda do the same!
6. Uganda is three hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT. Which time zone is Uganda in?

Answer: EAT

EAT is East Africa Time, which is three hours ahead of GMT. Other countries in the EAT time zone include Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Somalia, Sudan, and Tanzania. Uganda does NOT have a Daylight Savings Time. CVT is Cape Verde Time, and is only used in Cape Verde; it is one hour behind GMT. MUT is Mauritius Time, which is four hours ahead, the same as SCT, or Seychelles Time. Finally, WET is Western Europe Time, which has the same time as the Greenwich Mean Time.
7. Of the four lakes mentioned, which is found completely within Uganda?

Answer: Lake Kyoga

While all are lakes in Uganda, only Lake Kyoga is found completely within Uganda. Lake Kyoga can be connected to the other lakes, however, through one river, the Victoria Nile. South of Lake Kyoga is Lake Victoria, west of the lake is Lake Albert, and south of Lake Albert is Lake Edward. Lake Albert and Lake Edward are both in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Lake Victoria is also in Tanzania and Kenya.
8. The equator travels right through Uganda. Where in relation to the capital of Kampala is the equator?

Answer: South of Kampala

The equator is just south of Kampala. Entebbe, another city in Uganda, is even closer to the equator, almost directly on the invisible line. Because of Kampala's nearness to the equator, the climate is usually rather hot. In fact, record lows average from 54 to 59 degrees F (12-15C).
9. Which of these is not a city in Uganda?

Answer: N'Djamena

N'Djamena is the capital of Chad. Gulu is about 200 miles (320 km) north of Kampala, Jinja is 54 miles (87 km) east of Kampala, and Mbarara is 170 miles (270 km) southwest of Kampala. All distances are by road, not by straight path distances.

Jinja is also located right by where the Victoria Nile meets with Lake Victoria.
10. On which mountain in Uganda is Margherita Peak, the highest point in the country, as well as the third highest mountain in Africa?

Answer: Mount Rwenzori (Mount Stanley)

Mount Rwenzori (previously known as Mount Stanley) is the third highest in all of Africa, with its tallest peak being Margherita Peak at 16,763 feet (5,109 m). It is also the highest mountain in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, since it is right on the Uganda/Congo border.

Mount Kenya is the second highest peak in Africa, and the tallest in, well, Kenya. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, and is located in Tanzania. Mount Karisimbi is the fifth highest mountain in Africa, as well as the highest in Rwanda, on the Rwanda/Congo border.
