Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You enter the mouth of the Amazon River from the Atlantic Ocean, bound for the City of Manaus. In which direction will you be traveling most of the way?

Answer: West

Arriving in Manaus, you will have covered only half the length of the Amazon River, the headwaters of which are in the Peruvian Andres. While the Amazon is only the second longest river in the world, it is, by far, the one river which drains more water than any other.
2. You enter the Hudson River Estuary from Upper New York Bay. Your goal is Albany, the state capital of New York. In which direction will you be going?

Answer: North

There is a small debate about where the Hudson River actually begins. One argument upholds Lake Tear of the Clouds in the Adirondack Mountains. A more widely held argument says the river begins at Henderson Lake in Newcomb, New York.
3. You enter the Yangtze River from the East China Sea at Shanghai. Your goal is the Three Gorges Dam between Wuhan and Chongging. Although you will be meandering a great part of the time, in which direction will you generally by heading?

Answer: West

The Yangtze is one of the two largest and most important rivers in China, the other being the Yellow River. It is the longest river in Asia and the third longest river in the world. In terms of generating capacity, the Three Gorges Dam was the largest hydroelectric power station on the planet in 2013.
4. You enter the mouth of the Columbia River from the Pacific Ocean at Astoria, Oregon, and follow the river to Portland. From there you wish to travel upriver through the Columbia River Gorge, past the Dalles, to the Tri-Cities of Richland, Pasco and Kennewick. In which direction will you be primarily traveling?

Answer: East

Crossing the Columbia Bar is the most dangerous part of your journey. The shifting sandbar creates so many risks that it is called "the Graveyard of Ships." In making this voyage, you travel some of the route explored by Lewis and Clark.
5. You enter the Nile River from the Mediterranean Sea and proceed upstream past Luxor to the Aswan Dam. In which direction is your river voyage?

Answer: South

Farther upstream, the Nile divides into the Blue Nile and the White Nile at Khartoum. The ancient name for the Nile meant "Great River" or simply "the River." The derivation of its modern name is disputed.
6. You enter the Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico, pass the City of New Orleans, and then head up river for the long voyage to Coon Rapids, Minnesota, or maybe Saint Cloud, Minnesota, depending upon the water. In which direction will you be proceeding almost entirely?

Answer: North

The Mississippi River is the fourth longest river in the world, the tenth largest river in the world, and the primary riverine draining system in North America. Its name is a corruption of an Ojibwe or Algonquin word meaning "great river" which seems apt.
7. You enter the Mekong River and travel through Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Burma and China. As you progress toward the headwaters, in what general direction are you proceeding?

Answer: Northwest

The Mekong (under several different names) marks the boundaries between several different nations, e.g. between Laos and Thailand, between Burma and Laos.
8. You enter the Thames Estuary from the North Sea and make your way up the River Thames hoping to go past Oxford as far as Kemble. While the river twists and turns a bit, in what general direction will you be floating?

Answer: West

The River Thames is probably the best known river in the U.K. because it flows through London. The River Severn is actually the longest river in the U.K.; it flows partly through Wales.
9. You enter the River Seine from the English Channel near Le Havre. Your goal is Paris. In what direction must you proceed upriver?

Answer: East

The Seine branches into so many parts that it is almost arbitrary to say which is the Seine and which is not. The draining system is known collectively as the Seine Basin.
10. You enter the Fraser River from the Strait of Georgia at Vancouver in British Columbia and follow it to Chilliwack. After a layover there, you wish to proceed upriver through Williams Lake and Quesnel as far as Prince George. In what direction will you be traveling from Chilliwack to Prince George?

Answer: North

The Fraser River is the longest river in British Columbia. It is named after Simon Fraser who, in 1808, explored and navigated its length from Prince George to the sea.
