Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these mountains, located in Kluane National Park and Reserve, has the honour of being Canada's highest mountain?

Answer: Mount Logan

Mount Logan is located in the Yukon territory of Canada, as part of the Saint Elias Mountain range. It was named for the geologist Sir William Edmond Logan. In 1992, the elevation of Mount Logan was measured at 19,551 feet, but experts believe that the mountain is still slowly rising because of the phenomenon of tectonic uplifting, and, in 2010, the elevation measured 19,850 feet.

In addition to being the tallest mountain in Canada, Mount Logan is the second-tallest mountain in all of North America and the Caribbean (behind Mount McKinley, in Alaska). Also, Mount Logan has the largest circumference (at its base) of any other non-volcanic mountain in the world.
2. This next mountain is not known so much for spectacular height or size, but rather for a special product that is cultivated both near and at the top of the mountain. On which island nation would you find Blue Mountain Peak?

Answer: Jamaica

Blue Mountain Peak is only one mountain in the whole Blue Mountains range, but this particular peak is the highest in Jamaica, at 7402 feet high. The special product is the expensive gourmet Blue Mountain Coffee. This coffee is regulated by the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica, which certifies that the beans were cultivated in the Blue Mountains and a certain percentage of the beans had to be of a certain size, with no defects.

The Blue Mountains are also a popular spot for locals and tourists alike to go hiking or camping. It is approximately a three or four hour hike to the top of the peak, and traditionally hikers like to arrive at the top at sunrise, for the spectacular view.
3. There are several mountains in the world which are known as Mount Olympus, one of the most notable being the one in Greece, home to the gods and goddesses of Greek mythology. Another Mount Olympus, which more commonly goes by its Latin name, Olympus Mons, is a lot bigger than the one in Greece. Where would we find Olympus Mons?

Answer: On Mars

Olympic Mons is the biggest and tallest known mountain/volcano in the solar system, and is located on the planet Mars. It is nearly three times the size of Mount Everest. Astronomers first observed the mountain in the 19th century, though it wasn't confirmed to be a mountain (nor known to be so big) until 1972, when Mariner 9 photographed it in space.

It is surrounded by other volcanoes, including Arsia Mons, Pavonis Mons and Ascraeus Mons, which are much smaller than Olympic Mons--but still rather large by Earth standards.
4. This mountain, the highest in the Alps and in Western Europe, sits on the border between France and Italy, with each country claiming it as its own. Which of these choices fits this description?

Answer: Mont Blanc

The summit of Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco in Italian) sits 15,781 feet above sea level. French and Swiss cartographers have placed the mountain's peak inside French borders, but Italian experts who have studied the maps and region say the mountain belongs entirely to Italy. Mont Blanc is considered to be the birthplace of modern mountaineering.

It also was the site of some events at the very first Winter Olympic Games in 1924, which were held in Chamonix, a town at the base of the mountain on the French side.
5. Which mountain in Egypt has a particular religious significance? It is sometimes called Jabal Musa.

Answer: Mount Sinai

Mount Sinai is located in Saint Katherine City, on the Sinai peninsula in Egypt. Mount Sinai is next to Mount St. Catherine, the tallest mountain in the range. This Mount Sinai is considered by some to be the Mount Sinai of the Bible, where God passed down the Ten Commandments to Moses ('Jabal Musa' means Moses' Mountain, in Arabic). There is debate about this, however; the Bible gives only an ambiguous location for Mount Sinai, saying only that it is somewhere in Arabia, and some scholars believe that it wouldn't make sense for the Israelites to have traveled in that area of the peninsula.

Nonetheless, Mount Sinai in Saint Katherine City still holds religious significance: there are 3750 "steps of penitence" going up the mountain from behind the monastery, which sits at the base of Mount Sinai and Mount St. Catherine; and there is a mosque and a Greek Orthodox church at the summit of Mount Sinai.
6. Which was named first (in English): the country of Kenya or the mountain called Mount Kenya?

Answer: mountain

Mount Kenya is the biggest mountain in Kenya, and the second biggest mountain in Africa, at 17,057 feet high. The Republic of Kenya was named after the mountain; until the 1920s the region was known only as the British East Africa Protectorate. The mountain was discovered, then confirmed, in 1849 and 1883, and at the time went by the native name 'Kenia'.
7. This mountain is not particularly high, but is known for the cable car ride that takes tourists up it and its neighbours; which mountain?

Answer: Sugarloaf Mountain

Sugarloaf Mountain, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is only 1299 feet high, but is one of the defining geographic features of the city. The cable car, originally built in 1912, is 1400 metres long and goes from the base of Morro da Babilônia (Babylon Mountain) to Morro da Urca (Urca's Mountain), finally to the peak of Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar, in Portuguese).

These three mountains also form one of the largest urban rock climbing destinations in the world.
8. Which of these Asian mountains has the second-highest fatality rate of would-be climbers, and is nicknamed Savage Mountain, due to the difficulty of the climb?

Answer: K2

K2 is located on the China-Pakistan border and is part of the Karakoram mountain range. The name K2 comes from a cartographer's mark made on the first survey of the mountain range; the two biggest peaks in the range were labeled K1 and K2. K2 stands 28,251 feet, second highest on Earth behind Mount Everest. Approximately one in five people who attempt to climb to its summit die trying.

The mountain Annapurna has the highest fatality rate of climbers, at 40%.
9. Mauna Loa, the largest volcano on Earth, can be found in which U.S. state?

Answer: Hawaii

Mauna Loa means 'Long Mountain' in Hawaiian. It is the largest volcano on Earth, in volume and area. At 7100 feet high, it is the second highest of the five volcanoes of Hawaii (Mauna Kea being the highest).
10. The Vinson Massif, of which the highest peak is Mount Vinson at 16,050 feet, is located in the Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains. The mountain was never seen until 1958. Where is it?

Answer: Antarctica

The Vinson Massif is the highest mountain on Antarctica, named for a former US Congressman who supported the funding of Antarctica exploration. The massif was first seen in 1958 by a US Navy aircraft. Another large mountain, the Craddock Massif, is adjoined to the Vinson Massif on its southern end.
