Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pink may be thought of as the colour for girls, but what meaning does a pink gemstone have?

Answer: Love and beauty

The deepness of the shade of pink determines the amount of energy given out by it. Pink gives feelings of love, self-worth and tenderness. Some prisons have experimented with deep pink shades to calm aggressive behaviour in inmates. If you want to declare your love to someone give them a pink gemstone or a pink flower.
2. Purple is a colour associated with dignity, but if you saw a woman of Victorian times in a deep purple dress what would this signify?

Answer: She was in mourning

The Victorian mourning etiquette was very strict. Widows were expected to wear deepest black for two years, children one year and siblings six months. Once the period of deepest mourning was over colours could be lightened and mauve/purple was a colour used in "half mourning", which was the period between full mourning clothes and normal colours. Supplying such clothing was big business as it was considered unlucky to keep mourning clothes so they were discarded and new clothes bought next time they were needed.
3. Gold signifies wealth and prosperity, but what else can the colour gold symbolise?

Answer: Good Health

Gold is linked with the sun, and to wear gold promotes well being, prosperity and good health. In particular the wearing of gold chains promotes good health. Gold is also linked with high achievement, for example we give gold records, a Golden Globe, a gold medal, refer to the gold standard.

In everyday life it signifies the best accomplishment we can manage or the most desirable state we can aspire to.
4. If we feel low and miserable we often say we have the blues. Who was known as "Father of The Blues"?

Answer: W C Handy

William Handy was by no means the first musician to perform and write blues music. He was however the person who took it from regional folk music to an internationally recognised form and style of music. "Memphis Blues" published in 1912 introduced his 12 bar blues to the American public and he went on to become a prolific composer with "Beale Street Blues" and "St Louis Blues" being two of his best known works.
5. Amber jewellery has always been popular, but what exactly is amber?

Answer: Fossilised tree resin

Amber is fossilised tree resin. The oldest found is some 320 million years old, but most amber sold today is around 150 to 180 million years old. It comes in many colours ranging from milky white, through green to almost black. There is even a blue amber, although this is very rare and highly prized. Most pieces of amber contain pieces of plant material and air bubbles. Pieces with complete insects trapped in it are highly prized by collectors.
6. Terracotta has been a popular material for building and pottery for centuries. The word terracotta comes from Italian and translates to what?

Answer: Baked Earth

Terracotta pottery has been found in archaeological digs in virtually all major civilisations. It has been used for roof tiles, cooking pots, tiles, decorative pottery and of course the world famous Terracotta Army in China.
It is still used today for drain pipes, flower pots and tiles. The Natural History Museum in London, England, has a terracotta frieze running round the building depicting all the creatures that can be found in the museum.
7. In Chinese painting what does the colour violet signify?

Answer: Harmony

In particular it signifies the harmony of the universe, and this is because it is a combination of red (yang) and blue (yin) so is a perfectly balanced colour. In the United Kingdom it has become traditional to pack chocolate in deep violet packing materials because it is seen as a luxurious colour.
8. Mars is known as the red planet, but what gives it its reddish colour?

Answer: Iron Oxide

Mars looks red because of the iron oxide on the surface. In astronomical terms objects moving away from us have a red tinge to them, and Jupiter has a great red spot, which is believed to be a constant, massive storm.
9. Green is the colour of calm, growing things and jealousy. In which Shakespeare play does the "green eyed monster" appear?

Answer: Othello

The idea of jealousy being green-eyed probably pre-dates Shakespeare. In "Othello" the phrase "green eyed monster" is used by Iago and in "The Merchant of Venice" Portia refers to "green-eyed jealousy". In Renaissance England both green and yellow portrayed jealousy, and green and black were both attributed to bile, one of the "humours" thought to make up the temperament.
10. In Elizabethan England there were laws regarding the the type and colour of clothes that could be worn. Who was allowed to wear orange?

Answer: Lower Classes

The Elizabethans had a very strict dress code which was enforced by fines and other penalties. Because cheap, non-fast dyes produced from the madder root were used to produce orange fabrics, these were worn by lower classes. Upper classes could wear russet, a colour produced from the same root.
