Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our first stop is a huge square facing a basilica. To which Evangelist is the basilica dedicated?

Answer: St Mark

This basilica was built to house the saint's remains which were brought from Alexandria in 832. It was originally called the Ducal Chapel, but became the Cathedral of Venice in 1807.
2. Stay at the rear of the crowd to give yourself a chance to see and photograph the portico. Where would you find the portico?

Answer: Entrance

The mosaic is dedicated to the Book of Genesis, in the Bible. It is built on a series of concentric circles so that it fits into the dome. The theme details the creation of the sky, sea, animals and man. It concludes with the banishment of man from Paradise. So many rush in they miss that.
3. Mind your step as you climb the stairs to the quadriga, or "statues of four __"?

Answer: Horses

This was brought from Constantinople after the famous 1204 Venetian victory. It is the only one of its kind left in the world and details the four horses used to pull a chariot. The original horses on the steps are made of white marble and were deteriorating due to environmental conditions. They are now displayed inside. The horses you can see outside now are bronze copies.
4. I hear you gasp as you see the altarpiece in the Basilica. To whom is it dedicated?

Answer: The Virgin

This is the Nicopeia Virgin. The Byzantine painting dates to the tenth century, it is visible but the rest of the piece is covered by a sheet of gold and is studded with gems and pearl strings. The Virgin is the most venerated picture in the Basilica.
5. I see you looking at the floor and admiring the m___

Answer: mosaics

While all the floor is mosaic the best section to view is the right arm of the transept. These are incredible the colour, textured effect, and variety is awesome. Forgive me for highlighting my personal favourite; two cocks carrying a fox on a stick.
6. I'm glad you enjoyed that little 'green drink' in the Cafe Quatri. You wish to visit the palace beside the basilica next. This belonged to the former rulers or _____.

Answer: Doges

The Doge was the High Magistrate of the Republic of Venice. Did you notice the two post boxes, like faces with open mouths, as we entered? They were for posting secret accusations against tax evaders and oil adulterers. These were people, I assume, who watered the oil used for cooking and lights in order to make a profit.
7. This is the Hall of the College, which battle is commemorated above the Doge's chair?

Answer: Lepanto

This section was destroyed by fire in 1577 and on being re-built it became the most elaborate in the building. It was decorated by Veronese and Tintoretto.
8. Are the walls solid on the famous Bridge of Sighs?

Answer: No

There are little grills where the condemned got a last look at their families. You are surprised at how narrow the bridge is? Well! with a guard in front and one behind there was no escape, not even a chance to turn around.
9. Let us climb the campanile for a panoramic view of the city. Is this an original building?

Answer: No

The original dated back to before 1000 AD., but it collapsed in 1902. This tower was built in the same style using the same decorative material.
10. What feature is added to the lion as a symbol of Venice?

Answer: Wings

There is a fine example of a winged lion on the clock tower in St Mark's Square. Above it are the 'Moors', two figures with hammers who strike a bell to tell the time.
No extra points for identifying my enduring love affair with this fabulous city.
