Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what city did Ben and Jerry open up their first ice cream scoop shop in a renovated gas station?

Answer: Burlington

In the early 1970s two guys from Vermont decided to take a course in ice cream making. Their names were Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. Little did they know that they were about to become famous. Their first ice cream shop was in Burlington, in an old gas station. I remember going in there on one of my first visits to Vermont.

Then they decided to package pints of this wonderful dessert in another site in Burlington. Mom and pop shops were delighted to be able to sell this treat that Jerry delivered himself.

Many years later they opened a factory in Waterbury and began their factory tours.
2. What two products did the Cabot creamery make when they first began?

Answer: Cheddar cheese and butter

There was a butter company in Vermont that was started by some farmers who had extra milk. This was back in the early 1900s. They got together and sold it under the trade name Rosedale. About ten years later, they saw that they still had too much milk, so a cheesemaker was brought on board and they began marketing their top quality cheddar cheese.

The Rosedale company changed its name to Cabot sometime in the 1980s. One of the best things about Cabot cheese is that most of the products are free of lactose.

There is a factory and visitors' center in Cabot, Vermont, that offers tours and sampling. Another outlet store in located in Waterbury, near the Ben and Jerry's factory, where you can taste every product made by them. They can even ship it home for you if you are traveling.
3. Smugglers' Notch is a pass that goes through which mountain and in what mountain range?

Answer: Mount Mansfield, Green Mountains

Take a drive through Smugglers' Notch and you'll know that it was originally a footpath and trail for horses. It is between the villages of Jeffersonville and Stowe. It is a shortcut during the warmer months when there is no snow or ice on the ground. Back in the day, it was used to smuggle goods into and out of Canada.

It was against the law to trade with the Canadians as there was an embargo that prohibited it. But since Montreal was closer than most American cities in the region, the smuggling continued. Liquor was brought in from Canada during prohibition and fugitive slaves used it as an escape route out of America.

The Notch is closed to motor vehicles in the winter but cross country skiing can be done at the beginning on the Jeffersonville side.

There is a resort called Smugglers' Notch in Jeffersonville and they provide year round activities for the entire family.
4. Name the US state, other than Vermont, that borders Lake Champlain.

Answer: New York

If you want to go between Burlington, Vermont, and Plattsburgh, New York via Lake Champlain, just hop aboard one of the three ferries or cross over on one of the three bridges. Many towns and villages line the coast of the lake on both sides. Lake Champlain was named after the French explorer, Samuel de Champlain, who discovered the lake. During the warmer months, you will find many people enjoying all sorts of water activities on the lake. Quebec is the Canadian province that borders the northernmost point of the lake.
5. A movie made in 2013 told the true story of a cargo ship captain and the attack on his ship by Somali pirates in 2009. The captain hailed from which Vermont town and what was the name of the movie?

Answer: Underhill, Captain Phillips

The movie "Captain Phillips" was almost all true to life. Phillips was interviewed three times by Tom Hanks to get the character and facts correct. Although raised in Massachusetts, Phillips still lives on a farm in Underhill, Vermont. Underhill is an all rural village that is about a half-hour drive from Burlington.
6. What is known as "Vermont's Little Grand Canyon"?

Answer: Quechee Gorge

Photographers line the bridge of Quechee Gorge to snap some very vivid photos of Vermont's fabulous natural wonder. This gorge was developed from a glacier. During the warmer months, you will find kayakers paddling on the Ottauquechee River that flows through the bottom of the gorge. You will find this amazing sight on your way to Woodstock, Vermont, in a little village named Quechee in the town of Hartford.

Answer: Newport

Newport can be found at the southern tip of Lake Memphremagog. It is only five miles away from the Canadian border. Newport offers summer and winter activities. The lake is used in the warmer months by water enthusiasts and the popular Jay Peak is used by avid skiers in the winter months.
Lake Memphremagog is a glacier lake that has its northern most tip on Magog, Quebec, Canada.

a church at both ends of the street. There are many different kinds of interesting and exclusive shops and restaurants that you will not find elsewhere. Answer: Stowe

If you've ever seen or heard of the movie "The Sound of Music", then you know about the von Trapp family. This family came from Austria and settled in Vermont back in the early 1940s. Since Vermont reminded them of the mountains of Austria they bought a farm and ran a music camp when they were not on tour. They opened a lodge that looks like an Austrian villa in Stowe, Vermont. The vistas are magnificent. Activities such as horse-drawn sleigh rides (in the winter) and visiting their newly opened brewery in all seasons are available on the property.
