1. Here you see the city of Machu Picchu, built by the ancient Incas in today's Peru, lost for centuries and discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham. What does the phrase "Machu Picchu" mean?

Answer: Old peak

The city was built around 1450, when the Incan Empire had reached the zenith of its glory and power. It was abandoned around 1572, some decades after the Spanish conquest of the Empire. There are several theories concerning the citadel's usage by the Incas, while some suggestions exist that Bingham was not the first Western person to reach the city and see its ruins.
2. The westernmost point of South America is Motu Nui, an island just south of Easter Island. To which country does the island belong?

Answer: Chile

"Motu Nui" means "large island" in the Rapa Nui language. The first scientific survey on the island was the Routledge expedition of 1914, which reported that the island was inhabited by a variety of seabirds, including the sooty tern.

10. This piece of artwork shows a South American capital as it was in the 1750s. That city and the neighboring area were freed by Simon Bolivar's troops after the Battle of Pichincha. Which capital am I talking about?

Answer: Quito

Quito is the capital of Ecuador. It is also the site of many historical tragedies, such as a 1949 realistic adaptation of H.G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds" which resulted in many citizens panicking. Mobs lit fires and more than twenty people died as a result of it. Sixteen years earlier in 1932, a civil war occurred in Quito called the Four Days' War. That was caused by the election of Neptali Bonifaz and the realization that he carried a Peruvian passport.
