Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair/Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air". Which song by the Eagles begins this way?

Answer: Hotel California

The single "Hotel California" was released in 1977 in the album with the same name. There is a debate about the origins of the songs by both fans and critics, with the artists themselves claiming to have been inspired by their life in Los Angeles.
2. Which US city's name fills in the blank from a song by Leonard Cohen: "It's four in the morning, the end of December/ I'm writing you now just to see if you're better/___ is cold, but I like where I'm living/ There's music on Clinton Street all through the evening."?

Answer: New York

The song's name is, of course, "Famous Blue Raincoat". It was released in 1971, in the album "Songs of Love and Hate", the third album released by Leonard Cohen. The song contains references to the German song "Lili Marlene" and Clinton Street, while the usage of the phrase "Go Clear" has given some ground to claims that the song refers to Scientology.

In 1975, Cohen commented on the song: "I had a good raincoat then, a Burberry I got in London in 1959. Elizabeth thought I looked like a spider in it. That was probably why she wouldn't go to Greece with me.

It hung more heroically when I took out the lining, and achieved glory when the frayed sleeves were repaired with a little leather. Things were clear. I knew how to dress in those days. It was stolen from Marianne's loft in New York sometime during the early seventies. I wasn't wearing it very much toward the end."
3. Complete the title of a "Lynyrd Skynyrd" song with the name of a US state: "Sweet Home ___"?

Answer: Alabama

The song was released in 1974 and included in the album "Second Helping". It was an answer to two songs by Neil Young, who accused people of the American South for racist behaviors. As Ronnie Van Zant said, "We thought Neil was shooting all the ducks in order to kill one or two". Later, Young admitted that in his songs he was overly accusing and that he did not like the lyrics he himself had sung.
4. Which country's name fills in the blank of the following lines from a David Bowie song: "I'm a mess without my little ___ girl/Wake up in the mornin' where's my, little ___ girl?/ I hear our hearts beating, loud as thunder/ I saw the stars crashing down"?

Answer: China

In fact, Bowie recorded the song second, after Iggy Pop, but his rerecording was far more successful than Pop's. Bowie included his recording in the album "Let's Dance", which was released in 1983, while Pop had included his version in "The Idiot", which was released in 1977.

While the song is named "China Girl", it may had been inspired by Pop's affair with Kuelan Nguyen, who was a Vietnam girl.
5. Choose the correct of the following beach names that completes the title of the supposed second most recorded pop song: "The Girl from ___"?

Answer: Ipanema

The song was written in the early 1960s, with the Portuguese lyrics being written by Vinicius de Moraes and the English by Norman Gimbel. The music was composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim. The first verson was recorded by Pery Ribeiro and many other artists have followed, including Frank Sinatra.
6. The famous duo Simon and Garfunkel sung a single about a fair in an English town. Which one?

Answer: Scarborough

Although Simon and Garfunkel recorded the song brilliantly, it was not written by them or for them to record. The song is, in fact,a medieval ballad, dating at the times of the Great Plague, the Black Death that befell Europe at the last centuries of the Middle Ages. Simon and Garfunkel recorded it as part of their album "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme" which was released in 1966.
7. "Flew in from ___ Beach BOAC/ Didn't get to bed last night/ On the way the paper bag was on my knee/ Man, I had a dreadful flight" Which US city's name flls is the blank of a single by "The Beatles"?

8. Fill in the blank with the name of a US state in order to get the title of a song by the Charlie Daniels band: "The Devil Went Down to ___"?

Answer: Georgia

The song was released in the album "Million Mile Reflections", which was released in 1979. 9. Which US city's name fills in the blank in a song by "The Animals": "There is a house in ___/ They call the Rising Sun/ And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy/ And God I know I'm one"?

Answer: New Orleans

The song is, of course, "House of the Rising Sun". While "The Animals" were not the first to sing it, their recording made the song famous worldwide. It is possible that the term "House of the Rising Sun" is an euphemism for a brothel, although it is not known for sure. The version sung by "The Animals" was released in 1964, in the album "The Animals".
10. One of the songs sung in the movie "Never on Sunday" contains the name of a Greek port. Complete the song's title: "The Children of ___"?

Answer: Piraeus

The song was sung by Melina Mercouri in the film. The music was composed by Manos Hadjidakis, who also wrote the Greek lyrics. Despite the great success of both the movie and the song, Hadjidakis was not pleased and never lost a chance to put the song down.

It is also said that, while he received an Academy Award for composing the score of the movie, he did not hold it in high esteem and thew it in his garbage bin during the 1970s, although those claims lack an official proof by the family of the artist.
