Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To what mountain range does Mount St. Helens belong?

Answer: The Cascades

The Cascades are situated in Northwest America. The 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens was one of the worst volcanic eruptions in the United States. One whole side of the mountain was blown away, ruining its perfect cone shape.
2. What is the name of the mudflow that is sometimes created by melted snow? This mudflow often races down the sides of a volcano.

Answer: Lahar

Lahars race down the volcano and surrounding valleys, before reaching towns and villages and flooding them completely. Lahars can be formed by lava melting snow or glacier-induced flooding, among other causes.
3. In what year did a famous eruption occur in Krakatau? It practically destroyed the island.

Answer: 1883

On 27th August 1883, a volcano on the tiny Indonesian island of Krakatau completely destroyed the island and created one of the loudest explosions ever heard by humankind. The eruption caused massive tsunamis which reached up to 40 metres in height.

Answer: The Hawaiian Islands

Hawaii is almost completely composed of volcanic islands. There are many shield volcanoes on the Hawaiian Islands. The lava that erupts from Hawaiian volcanoes is slow and sticky.

8. What are the two main dangers of pyroclastic flow?

Answer: suffocation and burning

A pyroclastic flow races down a volcano at up to 100 miles per hour and internal temperatures can reach 5000 degrees centigrade. If particles of the dust are swallowed, they collect in the lungs and form a sort of cement, quickly suffocating the unfortunate person.
9. Where in the world is the Heimaey Volcano?

Answer: Iceland

The Heimaey Volcano experienced a substantial eruption in 1973. Nearly 5000 people were evacuated from the nearby town of the same name. The ground in the area tore apart and fire leaped from the ground.
10. What is lava called before it exits the volcano?

Answer: Magma

Magma is stored in a massive chamber called a magma chamber, 30 kilometres below the crater of the volcano. When the volcano erupts, magma races up the vent and pours from the crater, accompanied by ash and gas.
