Mount Erebus is located in Antarctica. It was discovered on January 27th, 1841,
by Sir James Clark Ross. It has a height of 3,764 metres. It erupted in 2011.

One major incident occurred in the late 1970s. Air New Zealand Flight 901 was on a scheduled sightseeing service from New Zealand to Antarctica when, on November 28th, 1979, it crashed into the side of Mount Erebus, killing all 257 people on board.

Here are some facts about Mount Saint Helens:

Mount Saint Helens is located in Washington, USA. It was discovered by the explorer George Vancouver in the late 18th century and is named after Mr. Vancouver's friend, Lord Saint Helens. This volcano stands 2,550 metres tall.

An enormous eruption on the morning of May 18th, 1980, killed 57 people. It also destroyed 250 homes, 47 bridges, 24km of railways and 298km of highway.

Mount Pelee is located on the island of Martinique in the Caribbean. It has a height of 1,397 metres. It last erupted in the 20th century in 1932.

On the morning of Thursday, May 8th, 1902, a devastating eruption destroyed the town of Saint-Pierre, killing more than 30,000 people. Amazingly, despite horrific burns, there were three survivors: Leon Compere-Leandre, Havivra Da Ifrile and Louis-Auguste Cyparis.

Mount Vesuvius is famous for one of the most violent volcanic eruptions in history. August 24th, 79AD began as any normal day would for the residents of the ancient Roman towns of Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum, yet it would end in destruction. At noon, without warning, nearby Mount Vesuvius exploded. Pompeii was buried in six metres of volcanic ash. Herculaneum and Stabiae were wiped out by boiling pyroclastic flows (surges of super-heated ash and steam) with temperatures of upto 400 degrees. Many people were suffocated by poisonous fumes or crushed by falling buildings. All three towns would lie buried for centuries until excavation began in the 20th century.
