Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What two bodies of water is Kingston situated near?

Answer: Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River

Kingston, Ontario is situated right where Lake Ontario meets the St. Lawrence River. For the record, there is a Mississippi river in Ontario, but it's farther north in Pakenham. Really great ice cream in Pakenham. Really. ;)
2. Which Canadian national historic site was originally built during the war of 1812 and was later completely rebuilt between 1832 and 1837 upon the completion of the Rideau Canal?

Answer: Fort Henry

It was originally built in 1812 to defend the Royal Navy Dockyards, situated where the Royal Military College now is. To learn more about this amazing historic site (and its awesome tobogganning hill) visit www.forthenry.com
3. Kingston is the home of what prestigious university?

Answer: Queen's University

Nipissing University is in North Bay, Ontario. Lakehead University is in Thunder Bay, Ontario. There is no UoK - I made that one up!
4. When he's not "busting" the supernatural, this "Blues Brother" is from Kingston. (Watch your spelling! Only the correct spelling will be accepted) Who is it?

Answer: Dan Aykroyd

Born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1952, Aykroyd now claims Kingston as his place of residence. He owns a cottage on nearby Loboro Lake, where he was often seen waterskiing with his good friend, the late John Candy. Back in 1996 or 1997 there was a rumour flying around Kingston that actor Mel Gibson was looking at realty across the lake from Aykroyd's cottage, but unfortunately he never did.
5. Which one of these is an interesting fact about Kingston?

Answer: It was the first capital of Canada

When Upper and Lower Canada united, Kingston became the first capital. The seat of government moved to Ottawa in the 1840s and the original parliament buildings became the site of the now-defunct Hôtel Dieu hospital.
6. Kingston is also known as "The _________ City," due to the large amounts of this type of rock that was used in the construction of many of the city's historic buildings.

Answer: Limestone

Lots of ummm.. "lovely" limestone. That, we have. Don't get me wrong, it's a great tourist attraction!... You just get tired of it after 20 years ;)
7. This famous band is from Kingston.

Answer: The Tragically Hip

From Kingston and Amherstview (a former township, before the amalgamation). Our Lady Peace is a Canadian band from Toronto, Ontario; Econoline Crush (also Canadian) is from Vancouver, British Columbia; and the Stone Temple Pilots are an American band hailing from California.
8. What harbour in Kingston offers some of the best sailing in Ontario?

Answer: Portsmouth Olympic Harbour

Built for the sailing events for the 1976 Olympic games that were played in Montreal. Funny enough, Toronto has decided to build a new harbour closer to the Ontario capital if they get the 2008 Olympic bid (they didn't), even though the Kingston site would be much better. Their reason: they want to keep Olympic tourism closer to Toronto. Humph.
9. Another historic site in Kingston is Bellevue house, which was home to which famous Prime Minister?

Answer: Sir John Alexander Macdonald

10. How many penitentiaries are there in the amalgamated Kingston area?

Answer: 6

Kingston Penitentiary (Maximum Security), the Frontenac Institution (Minimum), Bath Institution (Medium Security), Millhaven Institution (Maximum Security), Collins Bay (Medium Security) and Joyceville Institution (Medium Security). Kingston is sometimes jokingly called the "Penitentiary Capital of Canada."
