The Scranton of today, was, at the end of the Pennamite Wars, a collection of three small settlements: Razorville, Dark Hollow, and Hyde Park. Three homes stood in Razorville before Philip Abbot of Connecticut built the first home in the "Hollow." Philip Abbot and his brother, John, ran a grist mill on the Roaring Brook. The Abbot's mill was purchased by Ebenezer and Benjamin Slocum who expanded the grist mill and built a saw mill adjacent to it. The Slocum's wished to call the area Unionville; however, the area be came known instead as Slocum Hollow.

Scranton's seventh Bishop, John J. O'Connor, was to become the Cardinal Archbishop of New York. He was a retired naval Admiral, who had been an auxiliary Bishop in the Military Ordinate. He only stayed in Scranton for nine months, but was a very popular bishop. He transferred to New York and was replaced by Auxiliary Bishop James C. Timlin, the only Diocesan native to become Ordinary, as Scranton's eighth bishop, in 1984.
