Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Chile, when the saints came marching in They went to a town on the Pacific Ocean Their visit of the fishing port Caused a lot of commotion Ask the people near the river Maipo They ought to know. Please name the town.

Answer: San Antonio

San Antonio is a city on the Pacific Ocean and in 2012, 87,675 inhabitants enjoyed a mediterranean climate. On the bad side, there are earthquakes now and then. On the good side, you can visit good restaurants and enjoy Chilean wine and some seafood caught on the coast. San Antonio is a major fishing port. Talking of seafood: Saint Anthony is said to have preached to the fishes.

Another symbol of his is the burning heart (yes, these are flames!). The white lily as an attribute of purity is also his.
2. In the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes, hurray! The saints got from Chile to Argentina one day Climbing high in the sky on a mountain they found Astonishing 6,016 meters or 19,738 feet from top to the ground. Please name the mountain.

Answer: Nevado San Francisco

One way to get there is to travel through the Atacama Desert. The extinct stratovolcano was first climbed in 1913 and features lava flows and basaltic cones from the time when it was younger and hot. Oh well, even volcanoes have to settle down some day and get a well-deserved rest.

Saint Francis was known for his love of birds and other animals. As animals have some hard living conditions in a desert and on a mountain, the saint for this place is a good choice.

The other mountains are found in North America.
3. Tell me, saints, where have you been? In the Argentinian province's capital Tucumán, Independence House is certainly one Place there, you must have seen. What town is it? The province is part of the name.

Answer: San Miguel

San Miguel de Tucumán, usually just called Tucumán, was founded with the grand name "San Miguel de Tucumán y Nueva Tierra de Promisión" on May 31, 1565, by Diego de Villarroel, 37 miles/ 60 kilometers to the southwest of the place where it is now. About 100 years later, the people found a better place and moved over.

The area is an agricultural hubbub. There are also some interesting and beautiful buildings to be seen, like the Basilica de San Francisco. The town was the place where the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata were founded on July 9, 1816, the first step toward Argentina as it is today. As you might have guessed, this happened in the Independence House.

Saint Michael is represented by scales and dragons. Yes, I painted a dragon and scales, not a strange bird looking at an earring! Saint Michael needs the scales to weigh the souls of the dead. He is also the one responsible for the lack of dragons in our time.
4. The saints now try Their luck in Uruguay This saintly province, here Is wonderful for a sightseer. The Rio de la Plata coastline is Something not to miss A place of beautiful bliss In which province are the saints?

Answer: San José

The department of San José has many smaller rivers, but the coastline dominated by the mighty Rio de la Plata is surely impressive. OK, I've never been there, but mighty rivers are always impressive. The capital of San José is San José de la Plata. It is said you get a good wine in this part of the world.

San José is Saint Joseph as you might have guessed. The thing in the picture is a carpenter's square, the flower a white lily as the symbol of purity.
5. The saints made it to Brazil. A southern province is where they rest The Atlantic Ocean adds a coast With beaches, islands, and lagoons But what might make you ever more swoon: This province has an Oktoberfest. In which province are the saints now?

Answer: Santa Catarina

Santa Catarina has much to offer. Parts of the mountain chain Serra Geral are there. The moist subtropical Serra do Mar coastal forests and other natural treasures are found there. The waves close to the island of Santa Catarina are of great interest for people who like to surf.

Next to Italian and Portuguese immigrants, a lot of Germans settled in this part of Brazil. They build their own cities and one named Blumenau hosts the second largest Oktoberfest worldwide. I guess you know where the biggest one is.

Saint Catherine of Alexandria is a martyr. The wheel (usually with spikes) and the crown belong to her symbols.
6. The saints made it to the province of Lima in Peru To a district where tourists like to be On beaches on the Pacific Ocean so blue Enjoying a look over the sea. Which town are the saints visiting?

Answer: Santa María del Mar

Santa María del Mar is a district close to the ocean. It exists since the 1960s and hosts around 1.000 inhabitants. It offers hotels, apartments and restaurants, but most important: five kilometers/three miles of coast. That sounds nice and is nice. Especially on a hot day.

Like many other places it shares and I guess got the main part of its name from Mary (Maria), mother of Jesus. Her color is blue, and the crown of stars belongs to her.
7. To see a place in Bolivia with silver, lead and zinc The saints are in Potosí Department, in a mine going deep Everything else around seems to shrink A weird place to dream of, when asleep Please name that mine, this would be fine.

Answer: San Cristobal

In the 17th century, a priest discovered silver. Since then people have been digging for that and also found lead and zinc. It is an open pit, the largest in Bolivian history. Rock is blown off with explosives, put on trucks and put in a crusher. After some more steps, they've got what they want. The owners say that the mine is the third-largest producer of silver and the sixth-largest producer of zinc. Well, they should know.

Saint Christopher is said to have carried an unknown child over a raving river.
The child turned out to be Jesus.
8. The saints looked next for A city in Ecuador Found in the foothills of the Andes, there also reside Tsáchila people in the town's neighborhood De los Colorados as well in their name which as understood Adds to our city's name los Colorados or the Dyed. Which city is the answer?

Answer: Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo de los Colorados was founded in the late 19th century, a mere village at that time. In 2010 the official population counted was over 500,000. The town is on the way from the capital city Quito to the Pacific coast. The climate around there is tropical monsoon which isn't that good for tourism, but good for plantations full of fruit like bananas and pineapples.

This is not a dog with a Popsicle. The dog is carrying a torch. It is said that the mother of Dominic dreamed before his birth of a dog with a flaming torch jumping from her womb, ready to set the world on fire. Saint Dominic founded the Dominican order.
9. In Colombia the saints floated from the Andes On a river to the Pacific Ocean Part of the Esmeraldas-Pacific Colombia mangroves are at this place This wonder of nature filled them with emotion Which river did they travel on?

Answer: San Juan

The San Juan River -Río San Juan- is about 380 kilometers (240 miles) long. This important river ends in a huge delta. There you are able to find the mangroves I mentioned in the question.

A snake living around there is named after the river: "Dipsas sanctijoannis"
That snake is not green and it doesn't have wings like the serpent on a chalice. The story is that Saint John survived a poisoned cup offered to him.
10. To French Guiana the saints went at last Visiting a commune with a river added to the name A beautiful place now, but in the past Prisoners stayed there on way to Devil's Island of ill fame Thank God these times have passed! At what distant part of France, our saints picked a palm frond? The other places are in European France.

Answer: Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni

French Guiana is an oversea department of France. Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni is named after Saint Laurence and the Moroni River. In the bad old days its main fame was a prison; some convicts stayed there, others had to move on to Devil's Island.

Today you can visit the old prison buildings. If you are feeling too depressed after this, use some euro to buy a good local rum (there are sugar cane plantations in that area) or wood works to liven your spirits.

The place is named after Saint Lawrence (Laurence). He is said to have been martyred to death on a gridiron. The legend has it, that he remarked:
"I'm well done on this side. Turn me over!"

The roasting made him patron saint of cooks, and the remark patron saint for comedians.

On this happy note, I end the trip to South America.
