Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Panthera pardus has a story to tell

Answer: Bagheera

"Had I known how deeply I was to be involved, I would've obeyed my first impulse and walked away."

Bagheera is the black panther telling the story. He is the first animal we really notice in the movie and, together with Baloo, the last one.
He is the one who discovers Mowgli as a little baby, gets him to a good place to grow up and later helps him to get through the jungle.

As the story plays in India, he must be an Indian leopard with melanism. Melanism is responsible for the black fur, instead of the regular spotted one.
2. This little "Homo Sapiens" is heard weeping

Answer: Mowgli

"I wanna stay in the jungle!"

They call him a man-cub in the movie. We first meet him as a little lost baby.
And watch him grow up. When Shere Khan approaches, he doesn't see the danger and wants to stay in the jungle, instead of moving into a village. After a lot of adventures, he ends up there of his own free will.

I always thought it a little strange that his loincloth fitted him from his baby days on.
3. This male Canis Lupus Pallipes raises him well

Answer: Rama

"But.... but the Man-cub is.... well, he's like my own son!"

Rama is an Indian wolf who helped raise little Mowgli. Ordered by his wolf pack, Mowgli has to leave it, because they are afraid of the tiger.

Indian wolves live in packs and are a subspecies of the grey wolf. There have been cases known of children raised by wolves.
4. And this Python Molurus nearly puts the boy to sleep

Answer: Kaa

"I have... trouble with my sinuses .... It's simply terrible. I can't eat, I can't sleep, so I sing myself to sleep. You know, self-hypnosis."

Kaa is an Indian python with a hissing accent, and hypnotic eyes. Kaa has a devouring interest in Mowgli.

Pythons like Kaa can reach a length of 3 meters and use one or two coils of their body to hold their prey (mostly mammals), squeeze it and swallow it head first. They are not known to use hypnosis, but maybe this is Kaa's individual style.
5. An Elephas Maximus Indicus, a commanding bull

Answer: Colonel Hathi

"Nonsense, Winifred, old girl. An elephant never forgets."

Colonel Hathi is a proud Indian Elephant, leader of his troop, using a military style. Mowgli befriends himself with his young elephant son. Also, Shere Khan learns from a conversation between Bagheera and the colonel about a helpless child (Mowgli) lost in the jungle.

Indian elephants can reach a shoulder height of between 2 and 3.5 meters and a weight between 2,000 and 5,000 kg.
6. Meet Mrs Elephas Maximus Indicus, someone to admire

Answer: Winifred

"Well, you just forgot our son!"

Winifred follows her husband and edges her husband to look for the lost child.

In opposite to the portrait given in the movie, the ladies are the leader of the troop. So in real life, Winifred would be in command!
7. A relaxed Melursus Ursinus who is mighty cool

Answer: Baloo

"That's my boy. And you're gonna make one swell bear. Why, you even sing like one."

Baloo is the mighty bear who just enjoys life. He shows Mowgli this art, but Bagheera convinces him that the boy must live with his own kind.

The real Baloo would most likely be a Sloth Bear. This species feeds on termites, fruit and ants. The latter two things are eaten by Baloo in the movie. You can see it in "The Bare Necessities", Baloo picks a pawpaw and feeds on ants.
8. One of the species Pongo is mad about fire

Answer: King Louie

"Word has grabbed my royal ear... Have a banana."

King Louie loves fire and hopes that Mowgli can help him solve the secret. Therefore, he kidnaps him.

I wonder how King Louie made it into the Indian jungle? As an orangutan he should live on Borneo or Madagascar. Ok, maybe his fellow monkeys imported him from that island.
After all: the British got their royal house from Germany!
9. Panthera Tigris Tigris is out to kill his prey

Answer: Shere Khan

"Ah, you have spirit for one so small. And such spirit is deserving of a sporting chance."

Shere Khan is a mighty Bengal tiger trying to kill Mowgli. And yes, there are sometimes man-eating exemplars. Most tigers though prefer prey like antelopes or rabbits. As it is, the national animal of India has more reason to fear the man child than the other way around. They are an endangered species.
10. One of four Gyps Indicus that come to help, hurray!

Answer: Flaps

"Blimey! He's got legs like a stork, he has."

They saved Mowgli and got a good idea how to fight the striped one.

The Indian Vulture is critically endangered, and opposite to the movie is bald.
They prefer breeding on hill crests. Like other vultures, they live off of dead animals and are therefore most important for keeping nature clean.
Just like the four singing vultures, they hover in flocks.
