Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Great Barrier Reef

Answer: Australia

This is the largest coral reef system in the world. It is located off the coast of Queensland which is in the northeast of Australia. The system has about nine hundred island and twenty nine hundred reefs and stretches for twenty three hundred kilometers (fourteen hundred miles).

It can be seen from space and is the single largest structure on Earth made by living organisms. The system supports a wide array of wildlife that includes sea birds, turtles, whales, dolphins, crocodiles and sea snakes. Approximately fifteen hundred different species of fish live there.
2. Mauna Loa

Answer: USA

Mauna Loa is located on the island of Hawaii in the United States. It is the largest subaerial volcano in the world and the second largest overall in the world. It was formed when tectonic plates shifted over what's known as the Hawaii hotspot. It is an active volcano and is a shield volcano (meaning that it looks like a warrior's shield if looked down upon it from above).

It takes up over half of the surface area of the island of Hawaii and rises over thirty thousand feet from base to summit (over nine thousand meters).

It has three overlapping pit craters and although the volcano is active, eruptions are generally non-violent.
3. Angel Falls

Answer: Venezuela

Angels Falls are the highest uninterrupted waterfalls in the world. They are almost one thousand meters high (over three thousand feet). They're located in Canaima National Park, in the Auyan-tepui mountains. The waterfalls have two drops and also have rapids.

They are a popular tourist attraction but are located in an isolated jungle and not easy to get to. The average flow of the falls is just over thirty seven hundred gallons (five hundred cubic feet or fourteen thousand two hundred liters). During the dry season, which is December to March, the water slows to a trickle.
4. Great Slave Lake

Answer: Canada

Great Slave Lake is located in the Northwest Territories, Canada. It is the deepest lake in North America and is the tenth largest lake in the world. It has a depth of just over six hundred meters (a little over two thousand feet). It is almost three hundred miles long (four hundred and sixty nine kilometers) and at its widest is one hundred and twenty six miles wide (two hundred and three kilometers).

It's drained by the Mackenzie River.
5. Scafell Pike

Answer: England

Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England. It is located in the Lake District National Park in the northwest of England and stands at just under one thousand feet above sea level (thirty two hundred feet). It's part of a group of hills called the Southern Fells and forms part of the inactive Scafell volcano. It is made up of igneous rock and is a popular hiking destination.
6. Kummakivi

Answer: Finland

Kummakivi is a really interesting site. It is a twenty two foot (seven meter) long rock that is balancing on top of a smaller rock. It looks like it could be pushed off but is firmly in place and cannot be moved. It is located in Ruokolahti, Finland and is protected. Legend suggests that giants created it but it was most likely glaciation that caused it.
7. Thar Desert

Answer: India

The Thar Desert, also called the Great Indian Desert, covers an area of two hundred thousand square kilometers (seventy seven thousand square miles). It forms a natural border between India and Pakistan and the vast majority of the desert is in India. About fifteen percent is in Pakistan.

The Thar Desert is the twentieth largest desert in the world and much of the desert is covered in large sand dunes. There are saltwater lakes located in the desert, which evaporate during the dry season.
8. Sahara El Beyda

Answer: Egypt

Sahara El Beyda, also called the White Desert Protected Area, is a national park that is located in Egypt. Fascinating rock formations can be seen in the park, made from erosion by wind and sand. The formations are white chalk rock and the area covers about three thousand square kilometers (eleven hundred square miles).

The area also has cliffs, sand dunes and oases and is home to animal species such as jackals, gazelle and the sand cat.
9. Shilin

Answer: China

Shilin is also called the Stone Forest. Located in Yunnan Province, China, it is a forest that is approximately five hundred square kilometers in size (just under two hundred square miles). The forest is made up of limestone formations that look like stalagmites rising up out of the ground.

Some of the rocks look like petrified trees giving the area the appearance of a forest that is made out of stone. They are caused by the weathering of limestone and are believed to be more than two hundred and seventy million years old.
10. Cave of the Crystals

Answer: Mexico

This fascinating cave is located in Chihuahua, Mexico, next to a lead, silver and zinc mine. The cave was discovered by two brothers in 2000 when they were working in the mine. What makes this cave interesting is the fact that it contains some of the largest selenite crystals ever found.

The largest is over thirty seven feet high (over eleven meters high)! Inside the cave it is extremely humid and hot, reaching temperatures up to 58°C (136°F). Without proper protection, people can only withstand a very short amount of time inside and the cave is quite unexplored.
