Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (Hidden Words) Find the city hidden in the statement below: "Temper the chocolate", what a capital idea from Western Australia.

Answer: Perth

The solution is
"TemPER THe chocolate", what a capital idea from Western Australia.

Perth is the capital city of the state of Western Australia and it is seen as one of the most isolated capital cities in the world. Despite being on Australia's mainland it is geographically closer to Jakarta in Indonesia (3,002 kilometres away) than it is to its national capital, Canberra, which is 3,106 kilometres away.

This question was tempered by Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19 who was born and raised in Fremantle, a short drive south of Perth.
2. (Anagram) Rearrange the letters of "a night snow" to find an American state.

Answer: Washington

The State of Washington was named for President George Washington and was the 42nd state to join the Union, in 1889. While Olympia is its capital, its largest city is Seattle. The highest point is Mount Rainier, an active volcano. It is sometimes referred to as 'Washington State' to differentiate it from Washington D.C., the nation's capital.

This question, with all its presidential qualities, was put forward by Phoenix Rising team member 1nn1.
3. (Fractured Words) Say the following words out loud to name a very large American city: HEW STUN

Answer: Houston

Houston is the fourth largest city in the US and the largest in the south. Named after the president of Texas in 1836, its rapid rise in growth can be attributed to the 1900 hurricane that destroyed the nearby port city of Galveston, along with its position as a seaport and railroad hub, the construction of the Houston Ship Channel, and the Texas oil supply.

Phoenix Rising team member 1nn1 did not have a problem in putting this question together.
4. (Missing Vowels) The vowels from the name of this island, located in northeast England, have gone missing! Perhaps the Vikings took them when they raided in 793 AD. Discover the vowels missing from the word below and restore the island's name: LNDSFRN

Answer: Lindisfarne

Lindisfarne is a tidal island, meaning that access and egress is only possible at certain times of the day. It is often called Holy Island, but, its rightful name is The Holy Island of Lindisfarne. The exact origin of the word "Lindisfarne" is uncertain, but it became known as Holy Island because of the monastery founded there by Saint Aidan in the early 600s. Remains of the priory can be seen still, along with a small castle, built from local stone. VegemiteKid and son loved their visit to the island in 2010.

5. (Rebus) Find synonyms for the following words and put them together to find a south-east Asian country: Warble + single + tiny opening

Answer: Singapore

The solution is;
Warble = Sing
Single = a
Tiny opening = pore

Singapore is a small country in South-east Asia. Its Malay name, Singapura, is derived from the Sanskrit words "simha" and "pura", which mean "lion" and "city", respectively. The origin of the name is unclear, but the Lion City is now a much beloved nickname of Singapore.

This question was manely assembled by Phoenix Rising team member purelyqing.
6. (Cryptic) Solve the following statement to uncover a European city: Mixed pairs in old Gaul?

Answer: Paris

Solution: Mixed indicates that the next word, "pairs", needs to be unscrambled to arrive at your answer. The hint in the clue is "old Gaul". Gaul was a region of western Europe during the Iron Age that covered areas that are presently known as Belgium, Northern Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg and, most importantly, France.

Lutetia Parisiorum was first established as a trading post by the Parisii, who were defeated by Julius Caesar's army in 52BC. Over time, the Roman influence waned, and in the 4th century, the future capital of France re-acquired its present name.

This towering question was constructed by Phoenix Rising team member ozzz2002.
7. (Hidden words) Find the African city hidden in the following statement: The Jewish leader took his precious siddur, banned for years, and was again able to use it for his daily prayers.

Answer: Durban

The answer is found here: "The Jewish leader took his precious sidDUR, BANned for years...."

Durban is a city located in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province. It has a unique blend of Indian and Colonial architecture and culture. Its mix of lovely beaches, nearby game reserves and the green corridor consisting of rivers, dams and valleys make it a fascinating place to visit.

JCSon, team leader of Phoenix Rising, originally hails from Durban.

The question was uncovered by Phoenix Rising member VegemiteKid, who has Durban on her 'little list' of places to visit.
8. (Cryptic) Find the European capital within the following cryptic statement: Start to build every rustic landscape in Nevada into a German city.

Answer: Berlin

The solution: The word "start" at the beginning of the sentence is an indicator to use the first letters (the ones at the start) of subsequent words to arrive at a solution that represents a "German city".
(B)uild (E)very (R)ustic (L)andscape (I)n (N)evada

Berlin, the capital of Germany, has a long and varied history. Human settlement dated back to the 12th century. During WWII it was the site of the last major battle of the European theatre. In 1961, the city was divided into East Berlin and West Berlin by a large wall, that was not demolished until 1989. It is one of the most populous cities in Europe, with about 4 million inhabitants, and stands on the River Spree, in the north-eastern quarter of Germany.

Berlin is the birthplace of actress Marlene Dietrich, architect Walter Gropius and explorer, Alexander von Humboldt.

This question germinated in the mind of Phoenix Rising team member ozzz2002.
9. (Rebus) Find synonyms for the following words and put them together to find the answer: Charge for service + Veto = The Valley of the Sun

Answer: Phoenix

The solution is;
Charge for service = fee
Veto = nix
Fee + nix = Phoenix

Phoenix in its present incarnation was founded in 1867 by a Confederate Civil War veteran named Jack Swilling. The name Phoenix was suggested by a member of his party, Phillip Darrell Duppa, because the settlement was built upon the ruins of an ancient civilization. From the ashes of the past the present city rose. Duppa was born in England and trained in the classics so his literary suggestion is quite understandable.

Phoenix is the capital and largest city of the state of Arizona. In 2018, it was the fifth largest city in the US, but its roots go back over 2,000 years with the Hohokam settling in the area at that time. They built extensive canals creating approximately 135 square miles of arable land. These same canal paths were used by the modern settlers and have become some of the most important canals in the region.

This question was written by Phoenix native and Phoenix Rising member tazman6619.
10. (Fractured words) Sound out the following words to identify a popular Asian island: Pooh Cat

Answer: Phuket

Phuket is the name of both a southern province of Thailand and the main island within that province. Phuket, which was a part of a major trade route between India and China is also Thailand's largest island. Between the 1500s and the 1900s it relied on the mining of tin as its major source of income but, as this began to wane, it turned its attention to boosting its appeal to tourists. It also boasts a large rubber plantation and it is a major reason why Thailand is one of the world's largest producers of the product.

This question was created by Phoenix Rising team member pollucci19 whose first trip abroad was to this island.
