Question 2 of 10
2. The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone reflects the park's great variety. Approximately how long is it? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. About three miles north of Old Faithful is a basin named for the shape of the deposits in it. Which is its name? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. In the far northern part of Yellowstone, near the North Entrance, is an area that continually mixes heat, water, limestone, and rock fractures to produce incredible color combinations. What is its "large" name? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Yellowstone's Sulphur Caldron is possibly the Park's most acidic area. The bubbling and roiling waters, about 190 degrees F, produce heavy fumes that permeate the area. At this site what do you think the pH level is? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. As this picture suggests, it is difficult to avoid seeing at least some of the animals in Yellowstone. Bison have no fear of humans or vehicles. Some visitors believe they can get within a few yards of a bison that is lying down. That is not a good idea, because most bison can run 30-40 MPH.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although neither the largest geyser or the most regular one in Yellowstone, this geyser is the most well-known, visited, and photographed, possibly because it erupts more frequently than any other large geyser in the Park. Which of these is it?

Answer: Old Faithful

On average, Old Faithful erupts every 90 minutes, but the eruptions can vary by half an hour either way. Eruptions last one and a half to five minutes and shoot between 3700 and 8400 gallons of water an average of 130 feet in the air. The other geysers listed can be seen by taking the Upper Geyser Basin Loop trail of 1.3 miles from Old Faithful Village.
2. The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone reflects the park's great variety. Approximately how long is it?

Answer: Twenty miles

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is up to 4000 feet wide and up to 1200 feet deep. Most of its features, including Lower Falls (308 feet) and Upper Falls (109 feet), Inspiration Point, and Artist Point, can be reached by car via the North Rim Drive and the South Rim Drive and/or by a short walk.
3. About three miles north of Old Faithful is a basin named for the shape of the deposits in it. Which is its name?

Answer: Biscuit Basin

A short boardwalk will take you through Biscuit Basin. At one time, such deposits were located all around Sapphire Pool which had brilliant blue water. An earthquake in 1959 caused the pool to erupt, scattering or destroying many of the biscuits. The biscuits, however, and the Sapphire Pool are still a major attraction.
4. In the far northern part of Yellowstone, near the North Entrance, is an area that continually mixes heat, water, limestone, and rock fractures to produce incredible color combinations. What is its "large" name?

Answer: Mammoth Hot Springs

Most of Mammoth Hot Springs can be seen from your vehicle and by walking very short distances. The Upper Terrace, Lower Terrace, Poison Spring, and Minerva Terrace are a few of the scenic splendors here. The hot springs produce about 750,000 gallons of mineral-rich waters each day, and the formations and colors are constantly changing.
5. Yellowstone's Sulphur Caldron is possibly the Park's most acidic area. The bubbling and roiling waters, about 190 degrees F, produce heavy fumes that permeate the area. At this site what do you think the pH level is?

Answer: 1.2

The pH level measures acidity from 0 (most acidic) to 14 (least acidic). At 1.2 pH, the Sulphur Caldron is very close to battery acid (c.1 pH), and below citric acid (c. 2 pH), or hydrochloric acid (c.3 pH). Across the road from Sulphur Caldron are several sites including the Mud Volcano and the Dragon's Mouth Spring.
6. As this picture suggests, it is difficult to avoid seeing at least some of the animals in Yellowstone. Bison have no fear of humans or vehicles. Some visitors believe they can get within a few yards of a bison that is lying down. That is not a good idea, because most bison can run 30-40 MPH.

Answer: True

Not only can they get up quickly and run that fast, they can easily catch someone approaching them. Yellowstone is home to over 60 different mammals. Seeing black bears and grizzly bears, elk, moose, and mule and white-tailed deer is very common. Sighting wolves, bighorn sheep, and pronghorns is likely. Such animals as the badger, otter, fox, lynx, and wolverine are seldom seen. [Hint: anytime you see vehicles and people at the side of a road, the probability is that they are watching some animal or animals.]
7. On your way to Mammoth Hot Springs, you might take a quick side trip to this area which presents columns of basalt deposited about 500,000 years ago. What is it called?

Answer: Sheepeater Cliffs

Sheepeater Cliffs were named after a tribe of Shoshone, the "Tukuaduka," which translates as "sheep eaters." Although most of the cliffs are inaccessible, a few can easily be reached by vehicle. While you are there, you may see yellow-bellied marmots.
8. Not far from Old Faithful is the largest hot spring in Yellowstone. It is named after its panorama of incredible colors. Which hot spring is it?

Answer: Grand Prismatic Spring

Grand Prismatic Spring is the third largest hot spring in the world (following Frying Pan Lake in New Zealand and Boiling Lake in Dominica). Found in Midway Geyser Basin, it is about 370 feet in diameter and 121 feet deep. Its colors, all those cast by a prism, are extraordinarily vivid. Grand Prismatic Spring is very much worth the short boardwalk trip to visit.
9. This photo shows a rainbow just after a storm on the largest freshwater lake above 7,000 ft (2,100 m) in North America. Which lake is it?

Answer: Yellowstone Lake

Another testament to the infinite variety of Yellowstone, Yellowstone Lake sits at 7733' above sea level. It is 20 miles long and 14 miles wide, has a shoreline of over 100 miles, and has an average depth of 137' (with a maximum of 320'). It offers such activities as camping, swimming, boating, hiking, and fishing (particularly for cutthroat trout), as well as ice fishing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing in the winter.
10. On the edge of Yellowstone Lake is a geyser basin that is part of a caldera within a caldera. What is its name? (If necessary, you could hitchhike there.)

Answer: West Thumb Geyser Basin

West Thumb Geyser Basin is part of the West Thumb Caldera that is inside the Yellowstone Caldera. It has a series of boardwalks that allow you to observe geysers overlooking the shore, on the shore, and beneath the water surface. The variety of hydrothermal features and the myriad of colors astounds. From here, you can continue south to Grand Teton National Park, another great place to visit.
