Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The oceanic point of inaccessibility, the point in water that is furthest from land, is definitely not a place you would want to visit. What ocean is it located in?

Answer: Pacific

The oceanic point of inaccessibility is approximately 1,670 miles away from the nearest bodies of land. Some land masses closest to it are the Pitcairn Islands, Antarctica, Easter Island, and Chile. Some people have called the point "Point Nemo" due to the captain from Jules Verne's literature.
2. Oymyakon, one of the coldest villages on Earth, was once -90 degrees Fahrenheit and its ground is frozen year round. In what country is this frozen tundra located?

Answer: Russia

Oymyakon is located at the eastern end of the Sakha republic. It is so cold that if you go outside in the coldest part of the year without adequate protection, you will die within 60 seconds! It was also used to house Soviet gulags, and as an airfield base during World War II.
3. Dallol, Ethiopia is one of the most unlivable places on Earth. Which one of these facts about it isn't true?

Answer: It is on the coastline of Ethiopia

Dallol is in the Northern part of Ethiopia. From 1960 to 1966, the average daily high temperature in Dallol was 106 degrees Fahrenheit. Located well below sea level, Dallol is near a volcano that contains many acidic hot springs. Ethiopia, a landlocked country, has no coastline.
4. Chernobyl is not a place you would want to visit after its nuclear power plant destruction in 1986. What oblast in Ukraine would you find Chernobyl in?

Answer: Kiev Oblast

Chernobyl is located near the border with Belarus. On April 26, 1986, there was a nuclear disaster that had long lasting effects for decades after the explosion, although only 31 people perished during the disaster. It even caused unexpected consequences such as an increase in the number of abortions performed due to fears of birth abnormalities.
5. The Sahara Desert is pretty inhospitable. Which one of these facts about it is false?

Answer: It is the largest desert in the world

Although this is assumed by many, the Sahara Desert is only the largest hot desert in the world. Antarctica is much larger and is also a desert. Sahara is Arabic for desert. It crosses from coast to coast in Northern Africa.
6. The Mojave Desert is also quite inhospitable. Which one of these facts about it is true?

Answer: It is located in the Southwestern United States

The Mojave desert includes a range of elevations, from Mount Charleston at almost 12,000 feet high to Death Valley, almost 300 feet below sea level. Although it runs near Mexico, it does not border it. Winters are known to be rather cold in the Mojave.
7. Alaska might be thought by some to be remote and isolated. What is the only town in Alaska that Canadian citizens don't need a passport to visit?

Answer: Hyder

This is due to the fact that Hyder is isolated from all American towns, but borders the Canadian town of Stewart, British Columbia. Since there is no practical way of reaching the rest of the USA through Hyder, the United States decided not to man the border station that is located there. Canadian Customs, however, still has a presence there.
8. The Australian Outback is vast and you would not want to get stranded there. How many Australian States does the outback traverse?

Answer: Four

In addition to covering four Australian states, the Australian Outback stretches across a wide part of the Northern Territory. It is known for being extremely remote, with some places so remote that they require Australia's "School of the Air," an educational method where kids learn over radio or internet communications.
9. It's sad when nobody wants you, and that's exactly the case with Bir Tawil, a territory disputed between which two countries?

Answer: Egypt and Sudan

Bir Tawil is partnered with the Hala'ib Triangle, both of which are disputed by Egypt and Sudan. In 1899, when Britain was drawing the borders of its colonies, it created a straight line cut at 22 degrees North to separate Egypt and Sudan. This put Bir Tawil in Sudan and the Hala'ib Triangle in Egypt.

In 1902, they redid the boundary, giving a chunk of land to Sudan (the Hala'ib Triangle) and a chunk of land to Egypt (Bir Tawil). Bir Tawil, however, is barren desert, while the Hala'ib triangle has some resources and a small town.

Therefore, Egypt claims the 1899 boundary and Sudan claims the 1902 boundary. This makes Bir Tawil unclaimed land and the Hala'ib triangle claimed by Egypt and Sudan.
10. The Antarctic Ocean's freezing depths might not be some place you want to visit. What is the name of the southernmost point that is not permanently iced over?

Answer: Pippin Bay

Pippin Bay is part of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in Antarctica, which despite its icy sounding name, is actually water that is only sometimes frozen. Attu Island is one of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. Cape Morris Jesup is located north of Greenland, and the South Pole is always covered in ice.
