Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who emerged as the leader of the Soviet Union in 1955-6?

Answer: Nikita Khrushchev

Brezhnev was leader after Khrushchev, Stalin was leader from about 1927-53, and Beria was executed in 1954 for supposedly committing treason.
2. Who was the Stalinist leader that ruled Hungary before (and after)and was then condemned by the new Soviet leadership for excessive use of terror and the cultivation of a personality cult, amongst other things?

Answer: Rakosi

Rakosi resented having to share his power with the new Prime Minister, and waged political war against him until he was deposed in 1955.
3. Name the Prime Minister that the Stalinist leader of Hungary had to share his power with.

Answer: Nagy

Nagy was a more liberal Communist, and thus was approved by the Soviet leadership as a step towards de-Stalinisation (which, although it officially announced in 1956, actually started soon after the dictator's death).
4. What was the official name of the 1953-1955 liberal Prime Minister's plan for a liberalisation of Hungarian Communist rule?

Answer: The New Course

The policy initiatives of the New Course included the end of forced collectivisation, less censorship and allowing some free market economics.
5. Who was NOT a member of the so-called 'Quadrign' of leaders? (Pre-1953.)

Answer: Nagy

The other member was Revai. I apologise for not using the correct diarcitical marks!
6. Who deposed Nagy in 1955?

Answer: Rakosi

Rakosi immediately returned to his former hardline Stalinist policy, which was a large contributing factor to the 1956 uprising. Lenin was long-dead, I made the other two up!
7. What was the name of Nagy's plan for liberalisation, which was released in 1953?

Answer: June Resolution

The October Manifesto was 50 years earlier, being the 1905 concession by Nicholas II of Russia to give the people a parliament, or duma.
8. Which Soviet Union higher party member most supported Nagy's reforms?

Answer: Malenkov

Unfortunately he was not in a strong political position himself at the time of Nagy's deposition in 1955, and so was to be of little help.
9. What was the name of the intelligentsia group that played a large part in instigating the uprising?

Answer: Petofi Circle

This group started the protests against their demands not being broadcasted on the public radio station.
10. Who or what was "Irodalmi Ujsag"?

Answer: An opposition magazine

Okay, some of the other options were a little facetious! I hope you enjoyed my quiz as much as I enjoyed making it!
