Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The ancestors of today's Hungarian people are thought to have originated in the steppes of western Siberia. What were these tribesmen called when they were first encountered?

Answer: Magyars

The Magyars were one of seven allied Hungarian tribes whose original homeland is thought to be somewhere in western Siberia. Prior to their entry into Europe circa 400 CE, the Magyars had lived near and intermarried with both the Huns and Sarmatians, but they remained a distinct people.
2. When was the first Hungarian state founded?

Answer: 895

The area now called Hungary comprised parts of the Roman provinces of Pannonia and Moesia. The first Magyars arrived in the area as part of the Hunnish invasion around 370, but the entire Magyar nation entered the area in the early 9th century. The Principality of Hungary was established in 895 by Prince Arpad.
3. When did the Hungarian rulers officially convert to Christianity?

Answer: 1000

In 972, the Hungarian prince Geza began making overtures to the Pope about making Hungary a Christian state. His son, Saint Stephen I, received insignia of royalty from Pope Sylvester II in the year 1000. From this date, the country was known as the Kingdom of Hungary.
4. Similar to England's Magna Carta, the Hungarian nobility forced this king to issue the Golden Bull of 1222, recognizing their rights. Which Hungarian king issued this edict?

Answer: Andrew II

Hungary was a relatively wealthy state in the early 13th century, with an emerging merchant middle class. The tensions between the old nobility and the new middle class led to the nobles forcing the King to codify their rights in a royal edict, called the Golden Bull.
5. Upon the death of King Andrew III in 1301, Hungary experienced an interregnum and civil war for some twenty years. Which French nobleman finally reunited the kingdom in 1323?

Answer: Charles I of Anjou

With the death of Andrew III in 1301, the Hungarian Arpad dynasty came to an end. The nobles chose Charles Martel of Anjou, a French prince whose father was King of Naples, as the new King. There were other claimants to the throne, and not all of the nobility backed Charles, resulting in a civil war which only ended in 1323.
6. Which enemy inflicted a crushing defeat on the Hungarians at the 1526 Battle of Mohacs, killing King Louis II and ending Hungarian power in the region?

Answer: Ottoman Empire

Hungarian power and prestige had suffered under weak kings in the later 15th century. At Mohacs in 1526, the Hungarian army was routed and King Louis II was killed. Hungary was divided into three entities, with the Habsburgs taking the western part of the country, while the Ottomans ruled central Hungary and the semi-independent state of Transylvania.
7. After the Hungarian defeat at Mohacs in 1526, the northern and western parts of the Kingdom of Hungary fell under the control of which European dynasty?

Answer: Habsburg

The Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I, of the Austrian Habsburg family, was recognized as the King of Royal Hungary after 1526. Through almost constant wars with the Ottomans from the 1540s until the 1680s, Austria reconquered most of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary.
8. Hungary remained a Habsburg possession throughout the 1800s. In what year did the Hungarians revolt and seek independence?

Answer: 1848

Inspired by liberal revolutions in other European states in 1848, Hungary revolted against the Habsburgs. While initially seeking equality with the Austrians within the Empire, the war became a movement for independence. The revolt was crushed with the aid of Russia by 1849, but continued unrest led to the formation of the Dual Monarchy in 1867.
9. After the Dual Monarchy was established in 1867, Hungary remained in the Empire into the 20th century. In what year did the country gain full independence?

Answer: 1920

The Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed in the wake of their defeat in the First World War. The last Emperor, Karl I, abdicated in 1918. Hungary was recognized as an independent country by the 1920 Treaty of Trianon, but the loss of territory to other newly independent countries in the region was resented.
10. Hungary sided with the Axis powers in World War II and then fell into the Soviet orbit after the war. In what year did Hungary abolish the Communist government and become a republic?

Answer: 1989

Along with the other Eastern European satellite countries of the Soviet Union, the Communist government fell in 1989 and the country became a multiparty republic. Hungary joined NATO in 1999, and became a member of the European Union in 2004.
