Johnston was the commander of the Army of the Shenandoah in this great battle. Robert E. Lee at this time was the military advisor to Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

Irvin McDowell was the Union commander at First Manassas, John Pope commanded later in 2nd Manassas, Ulysses S. Grant at this time was in the Western Theatre, and George McClellan would shortly replace Irvin McDowell as the Union commander in the Eastern Theatre.
