Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mall of America Opens
Answer: August 1992
Oh happy days, the biggest mall in America is opening and women everywhere were happy to do all their shopping in one spot. The mall is located in the state of Minnesota and just outside of Minneapolis in the town of Bloomington. The mall is spread out over 90 acres. You can do so much more than shop here, you can go to the aquarium or play games at Gameworks. Husbands, guard your wallets!
2. 19th Amendment Women's Right to Vote
Answer: August 1920
Women have been fighting for equal rights for years. I visited the Belmont-Paul Women's Equality National Monument in 2019. These women back years ago, pushed and pushed and finally won the chance to vote in 1920. The Belmont-Paul was a house where the women would meet and come up with ideas on how to gain equal rights.
The monument is filled with signs and pictures of Alice Paul, who was the leader of the movement. The 19th Amendment that was proposed by James R Mann, was passed in the United States and women had a voice on who may be President! Even though the 19th Amendment allowed women to vote, it still would not allow a woman of color to vote.
3. Stock Market Crashes
Answer: October 1929
Some describe this day as the worst day in history. So much money was in the market, too much and some people took everything out, quickly! When that happened, everything was tumbling down. For weeks, the market dropped and the Great Depression started. People who went from riches to rags stories were everywhere, and the market did not recover to the same level until 1954. Many laws have been put into effect since this horrible event happened.
4. First Birth Control Pill
Answer: August 1960
The first pill, Enovid, was released in 1960, and women everywhere could avoid having children by just taking a daily pill. The pill was created by two gentleman, Gregory Pincus and John Rock. They had worked with the Planned Parenthood Federation of America to create the pill. Since that date, many other options are available to women everywhere, but Enovid was the original "Pill".
5. President Nixon Resigns
Answer: August 1974
What were the chances of a United States President quitting his job? President Nixon was found guilty of abusing his power during his reelection - from tapping phone lines to stealing paperwork. Yes, it was a form of espionage, one would say, to get reelected. President Nixon announced to the entire country that he was doing just that on August 8, 1974. I remember I was on vacation with my mom and we were watching the television with a lot of other people. Everyone was in shock that Nixon was resigning. All of this was due to two Washington Post reporters who pushed and pushed to gain the knowledge and information, along with a Pulitzer Prize! Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were portrayed by Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman in the movie, "All the President's Men" in 1976.
6. Apollo 11 Lands on the Moon
Answer: July 1969
The words we will never forget hearing this day was, "One Giant Leap..." said by Neil Armstrong as he jumped from the ladder to the surface of the moon. Can you imagine stepping on a surface that no one else had ever done before? John F. Kennedy had a dream or a goal, you could say, of sending men to space to walk on the moon. That became a reality in 1969.
Apollo 11 was launched into space on July 16, 1969, with three men aboard. The commanding officer was Armstrong, and his crew mates were Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin. Just four days later they were stepping on the moon. The men returned to Earth on July 24 and were recovered in the Pacific Ocean by the USS Hornet.
7. First Earth Day
Answer: April 1970
It would make sense to me if every day was Earth Day. Saving our environment with clean air and just making this a better place to live. Going 'green' as they say. Not the "Go Green" for Michigan State, but the kind to make the World a better place. Recycling plastic, wood, paper, etc. You're done with your toilet paper roll, what can you do with it? Put it in the recycle tub at home and they can make something else with the paper.
Earth Day was created by Gaylord Nelson. Gaylord was born in Clear Lake, Wisconsin, an appropriate home town for a man that came up with "clearing lakes and keeping them clean". He was surprised to learn that there was really no plan for the environment. He didn't want to just have clean air and water. He wanted to take it a step further and have all aspects of the environment. Every year we celebrate the day by hiking, cleaning up a park or by planting a tree. Think about what you can do next April 22!
8. Mount Rushmore Completed
Answer: October 1941
In 1927 Doane Robinson saw his dream start to come true as the project started. It wouldn't be finished until 1941. Some people say that it still isn't finished. They had originally wanted to have more of the upper bodies of the presidents, but the faces were the only thing that was carved out.
Doane was trying to get more tourists to come west through that area. He also selected the four men's faces as to 'who' would be on the mountain. Many people have disagreed with his choices and some people feel the mountain should be removed as a National Monument and returned to the Lakota people.
You can drive up to the monument and take the Presidential trail just below and look up to see the faces. If you drive from the south, a road called Iron Mountain Road, you can see the monument through tunnels. A beautiful and fun drive with lots of scenery.
One last note, the Avenue of Flags show all the states flags, including Puerto Rico. You can add your name to a list to purchase one of the used flags. There is a cost involved, but I think it's unique to have a collection like this. If you are from the state of Texas, plan on a long long time to get a flag. Sometimes the wait is years!
9. Alaska Becomes a State
Answer: January 1959
Two states were added to the United States in 1959 - Hawaii and Alaska, with Alaska taking that honor on January 3 being the 49th state. Alaska is actually our largest state. Alaska is also known for the highest peak in the United States. Denali National Park is home to the highest mountain, Denali tops out at 20,310 feet above sea level. I would love to thank Russia for allowing us to purchase this state for the very inexpensive price tag of 7.2 million dollars.
10. Pac-Man Debuts
Answer: May 1980
This was the first time you could place your hand on a knob and have a pizza gobble up a cherry, a strawberry, and a lot of dots on the screen! Pac-Man is probably the most well known video game in the world and one of the first video games. There were ghost type figures who would try to eat you before you finished gobbling up the dots. They were Pinky, Inky, Blinky and Clyde. Once you would eat all the dots then you would go a little faster on the next screen. Pac-Man was so popular that Ms. Pac-Man made her debut in 1982.
