Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the designer of the Focke-Wulff FW190?

Answer: Kurt Tank

The FW190 was one of the workhorses of the Luftwaffe and saw action on all fronts. Designed by Kurt Tank, it was accepted into the military in August 1941 and soon proved itself to be an able fighter, held in high regard by its pilots. It was an equal of the Spitfire Mk V in all aspects except turning radius. By 1945 over 20,000 had been built.
2. What was the maximum internal bombload of the British, Armstrong Whitworth Whitley heavy bomber?

Answer: 7,000 lbs

The "ugly" but robust and reliable Whitworth Whitley was the choice bomber of the RAF in the early years of the war. The plane was manned by five crew, and armament consisted out of a nose-mounted 7.7mm machine gun as well as a powered turret near the tail sporting a four 7.7mm machine gun array.
3. Which Soviet aircraft was nicknamed "The Flying Tank"?

Answer: Ilyushin IL-2 Sturmovik

German infantry also referred to the "Flying Tank" as the "Schwarzer Tod" or "Black Death". The nickname "Flying Tank" arose from the fact that the IL-2 could absorb a tremendous amount of damage and still complete a mission. It was, arguably, the most respected aircraft in the Soviet Air arsenal.
4. Which aircraft was the first operational combat plane during the war to incorporate a swept wing design?

Answer: Messerschmitt ME 163 Komet

The rocket powered, single seat, swept wing fighter might just be the most unusual front line fighter produced during the war. However, it was very unreliable and extremely dangerous to pilot. The Komet could achieve speeds in excess of 590 miles per hour and could, astonishingly, climb to 30,000 feet in less than a minute. Once airborne it could wreak havoc among bomber formations.
5. Which legendary aircraft is popularly credited as playing a key role in winning the Battle of Britain?

Answer: Supermarine Spitfire

Not much can be added to the glory of the undisputed champion of the RAF, acknowleged by most as the finest aircraft of its time.
6. In April 1945, the USS Mannert L. Abele was sunk off Okinawa by a new but desperate rocket propelled aircraft. What was it called?

Answer: Yokosuka MXY7-K1 Ohka (Cherry Blossom)

This single seat, pilot guided suicide fighter was a macabre attempt by Japan to stop the advancing Allied forces in the Pacific. The craft was basically a flying, piloted bomb, released near its target from a "mother ship", then piloted at speeds nearing 500 miles per hour to its target.
7. Which fighter is generally accepted to be the most recognized and celebrated American fighter of World War II?

Answer: North American P51 Mustang

During the later stages of the war, the P51 Mustang contributed greatly to the Allied war effort. Its primary function was as escort, yet it could attack ground targets with deadly efficiency. In addition it proved more than a match for any aircraft the Axis could sent against it.

The Mustang was that all powerful, all American "classic war bird" and deserve its status as the most recognized American piston fighter of all time.
8. Which British aircraft played a major role in the sinking of the German battleship "Bismarck"?

Answer: Fairey Swordfish

Apart from looking like a relic from World War One, the Fairey Swordfish played a legendary role in Britain's war effort, from the brave attack on the Italian port of Taranto to the crippling of the powerful Bismarck, the Swordfish remain the unsung hero.
9. Apart from rocket powered aircraft, the fastest operational fighter plane of World War II was the _________ .

Answer: Messerschmitt ME 262

As the world's first operational combat jet fighter, with a top speed of 540 miles per hour, it outclassed every other fighter in the air at the time.
10. Which aircraft became the US Navy's first operational mono plane design?

Answer: Brewster F2A Buffalo

Despite holding the honor of being the Navy's first mono plane, the Buffalo was a failure. It was too heavy to engage in dogfights and lacked maneuverability as well. It fought a gallant fight at Midway, but its shortcomings became glaringly obvious as 13 out of 19 Buffalo's where lost to enemy fire.
