Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Focke-Wulf Fw190 was the finest German fighter plane. But it had some vices. Which of these was NOT one of them?

Answer: The complex undercarriage system was fragile and continuously gave problems.

The Wuerger was a well-built plane and especially its landing gear arrangement came as a major relief to the Bf109 pilots.
2. What company's design was the V-1 'Flying Bomb'?

Answer: Fiessler

3. What was the name of the single-engined fighter that proved a complete failure for the RAF during the Battle of Britain?

Answer: Defiant

Defiant's four-barrel turret came as a nasty surprise to the unaware German pilots. Once they figured out that this 'oddity' didn't carry any front-firing guns, they blew them to pieces with head-on attacks.
4. The Corsair was one of the famous US naval fighters. Except Vought, which other company undertook Corsair production?

Answer: Goodyear

The only thing different was the designation. F4U for the Vought-built machines and FG for those made by Goodyear.
5. The M.S.406 was the most numerous fighter in Armée de L'Air (French Air Force). What does 'M.S.' stand for?

Answer: Morane Saulnier

I am not a Frenchman but I hope my fakes convinced some of you :)
6. Which famous British fighter plane was modified for use by catapult-equipped merchant ships?

Answer: Hurricane

Until escort carriers became available in numbers, the Royal Navy employed Hurricanes in order to counter the Fw200 long-range patrol bomber. Of course these didn't carry floats and after the launch their pilots had to ditch them if land was not anywhere near.
7. What was the name of the improved B-24 model for use by the US Navy?

Answer: Privateer

8. The Ilyushin Il-2 is maybe the most famous Soviet aircraft of World War II. The 'Sturmovik' was a truly remarkable design and it contributed to the Soviet cause immensely. What was its (even more formidable) succesor called?

Answer: Il-10

Although reminiscent of the Il-2, the Il-10 was a complete redesign. The Russians could have fielded it earlier but they didn't want to upset the production momentum of the Sturmovik.
9. During the pre-war contest for the next Luftwaffe fighter, the He112 was recognized by many as a better machine than the Bf109. For various reasons, Heinkel was instructed to focus on bomber design. The nimble fighter did see some action but only in the hands of an Axis ally. Which was it?

Answer: Romania

10. When Italy invaded Greece in 1940, it enjoyed enormous superiority in the air. Considering the odds, the Greek pilots gave a good account for themselves. Which was the main Hellenic Air Force fighter at the time?

Answer: PZL P.24

Although all of the types listed above where in Hellenic Air Force at the time, the diminutive Polish fighter was by far the most numerous.
11. In which country's airforce could a Focke-Wulf Fw190 be seen flying along with Supermarine Spitfires and Curtiss P-40 Warhawks?

Answer: Turkey

12. In FAA (Fleet Air Arm) service, an Avenger was not always an Avenger. The British tried to put a new name to the the TBF but with little success. In the end, the American name prevailed. Which was that little-known designation?

Answer: Tarpon

13. What is the difference between a Me321 and a Me323?

Answer: The Me321 was a glider

The Me321 needed a trio of Bf110's or the special He111Z 5-engined tug to get off the ground.
14. The Soviet airforce fielded single-engined fighters coming from four different design bureaus. All things considered (pilot opinion, production run, operational success), which bureau's designs were the least successful?

Answer: Mikoyan Gurevich (MiG)
