Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which city is correctly paired with the geographic feature that most directly affected its growth?

Answer: Chicago - Great Lakes

The Great Lakes are on the northern boundary of the United States and spread from Minnesota to New York.
2. The Mayflower Compact is considered an important step in the development of American democracy because it ...?

Answer: provided a basis for self-government in the Plymouth Colony

The Mayflower Compact and the Virginia House of Burgesses represent the earliest attempts at self government in America.
3. Which economic policy was based on the idea that the American colonies existed primarily to provide economic benefits for Great Britain?

Answer: mercantilism

Britain (on a small island in the north of Europe with limited natural resources) depended upon its colonies for raw materials. The materials would be taken from the colonies, shipped back to England and manufactured. Britain made a LOT of money from this.
4. Why did the authors of the Articles of Confederation create a weak central government?

Answer: They feared the kind of rule experienced under the British monarchy.

Why would the Americans want another central leader, such as a king after being so dissatisfied with King George III? But, having no central leader was good in theory but was impractical. George Washington was sworn in as America's 1st president in 1789.
5. The Three-Fifths Compromise was included in the Constitution to resolve a conflict over what?

Answer: counting of enslaved persons in relation to taxation and representation

The 3/5 compromise counted five slaves as three people for the purposes of deciding the number of representatives that a state has (electoral votes). It had nothing to do with slaves actually voting.
6. What is one feature of the political system created by the original Constitution of the United States?

Answer: dividing powers between the national and state governments

Remember that the Articles of Confederation came BEFORE the Constitution and were ineffective because there was no central leader (among other flaws) and the states had too much power. In a way, the states were almost like separate nations.
7. At the Constitutional Convention, the delegates agreed that Congress should have the power to do which of these?

Answer: levy and collect taxes

Taxes! We still hate them! But, early Americans had been exploited by the British monarchy (before declaring independence) and taxed mercilessly (in order to finance various British wars). After the revolution, early Americans didn't want high taxes and the result was little national revenue (which was a problem).
8. Which of these actions is an example of the system of checks and balances?

Answer: The Senate approves a president's nominee to the Supreme Court

The solution to the problem of American citizens NOT wanting a single powerful leader ruling America was the system of checks and balances, which distributed the ruling power of America between the Judicial (supreme court), Legislative (Congress and House of Representitives) and Executive (president) branches of government.
9. One reason President Thomas Jefferson supported the Louisiana Purchase was that he wanted to ...?

Answer: gain full control of the Mississippi River

The Mississippi River branches out and connects most of North America. When Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803, there were few paved roads in North America, and waterways were the most efficient system of traveling until railroads were made from the mid to late 1800's.
10. The Monroe Doctrine (1823) established the United States foreign policy that ...?

Answer: opposed the creation of new colonies in Latin America

"The Monroe Doctrine was a United States policy of opposing European colonialism in the Americas beginning in 1823. It stated that further efforts by European nations to take control of any independent state in North or South America would be viewed as "the manifestation of an unfriendly disposition toward the United States." From Wikipedia article on the Monroe Doctrine.
