In the days prior to the Midnight Ride, Paul Revere instructed Robert Newman, the Sexton of the Old North Church to light one lantern if the British were traveling by land from Boston to Lexington, or two lanterns if they were traveling across the Charles River to get to Lexington. As it was, Newman held up two lanterns to signal that the British were traveling via the Charles River.
