King Philip II led the Macedon army to face the Athenians, the Thebans and other smaller states in 338 BC. Macedon rose because Philip became king and attacked all the surrounding enemies with new inventions of catapults and siege machinery, as well as the new phalanx formation armed with longer two handed spears called the Sarissa.

The sarissa was a 4 to 7 metre spear that a soldier carried with two hands while their shield was attached to the shoulder.

Answer: Alexander the Great

One of the greatest military genius commanders of all time, he led the Macedonians into Persia after King Philip's Death. After the Battles of Granicus, Issus and Tyre, he faced the Persians at the Battle of Gaugamela where he had to win. He did.

Ancient sources say there were around 250,000 Persians. Today's estimates are around 100,000. The Macedonians had 47,000. This is where Alexander used his strategic calculations to the limit.

Alexander died of a fever in June 323 BC. So he died at the age of 33. After he died, Macedonia came disorganised. Because he didn't have a son all the commanders were fighting for king. They came to an agreement to separate the kingdom, but then they went to war with each other.

They used this because it had a lot of weight at the end, making it have a good slashing follow through.

Alexander was born here in 356 BC. Father Philip and mother Olympias. He was 20 when he first became king, after the death of Philip.
