Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The common people of Rome were known as what?

Answer: Plebeians

Plebeians, or plebs, were basically made up of people who were not part of the patrician ranks, or the higher classes.
2. The years of the Second Punic War are known to be ...?

Answer: 218 - 201 BC

The way I remember this is by recalling the dates of two famous battles: The Battle of Cannae in 216 BC where the Roman army was soundly defeated, and the Battle of Zama in 202 BC where the Roman army was victorious and routed Hannibal, thus ending the Second Punic War.
3. Which group of Roman officals supervised public works, temples, and games?

Answer: Aediles

Aediles, unlike the Senate, was made up equally of plebeians and patricians. Praetors were the Chief Law Offices and Judges, Quaestors took care of the public money and civic treasury, and Augurs were experts in auspices (comparable to modern astrologers).
4. What were the "munera"?

Answer: gladiatorial games

Togatae are original Roman plays, Palliatae are Roman adaptations of Greek plays, and Quaestors were the overseers of the civic treasury.
5. Who commissioned the building of the first stone theatre in Rome?

Answer: Pompey

Pompey had the first permanent theatre built in stone in 55 BC in honour of his military successes.
6. According to legend, who was the mother of Aeneas?

Answer: Venus

Throughout the "Aeneid" by Vergil, Venus is seen aiding her son several times, such as shrouding him in clouds to hide him from unfriendly eyes (Book One), and delivering healing herbs from lands far away to heal his wounds in battle (Book Twelve).
7. Who was the famous Carthaginian General of the First Punic War?

Answer: Hamilcar

Hamilcar Barca was the father of Hannibal, who went on to follow in his father's footsteps in the Second Punic War.
8. Who was the leading Roman general at the Battle of Zama?

Answer: Scipio Africanus

Quintus Fabius Maximus, Gaius Varro, and Lucius Paulus were all Roman generals during the Second Punic War, the last two witnessing firsthand the destruction at Cannae. Zama is near Carthage.
9. In 42 BC, Cassius and Brutus were defeated at the Battle of ...?

Answer: Philippi

Marc Antony and Marcus Lepidus had originally granted amnesty to Brutus and Cassius for the murder of Caesar, but it was revealed later that Caesar had left a sum of money to every citizen of Rome from his estate. Naturally, Caesar gained much favour in the eyes of the citizens, and they began crying for his murderers' death. Cassius and Brutus, in fear for their lives, fled to the East.

It was there they were defeated.
10. The best known work of Augustus, giving his point of view on his own life, is called what?

Answer: Res Gestae

The best preserved copy was found in Turkey, engraved on a bronze plate in a temple. The work does not mention Marc Antony or Cleopatra, among other things, showing that was he was not entirely truthful in his account. This lack of truth was also shown in that he conveniently leaves out that he was ill during the Battle of Philippi, and that Antony was the one who truly won the battle with his superior tactics.
