Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On what date did Apollo 12 land on the moon?

Answer: November 19, 1969

Apollo 12 launched on November 14, 1969; 11:22:00 am EST from Launch Complex 39-A at Kennedy Space Center. The lunar module, "Intrepid", landed in the Ocean of Storms at 1:54:35 a.m. EST.
2. Between the three of them, how many spaceflights had the crew of Apollo 12 flown prior to this mission?

Answer: 3

The Commander, Pete Conrad had flown Gemini 5. Conrad and Dick Gordon, the Command Module Pilot, had flown Gemini 11 together. This was the Lunar Module Pilot, Alan Bean's first flight.
3. What was the fate of Apollo 12's S-IVB rocket?

Answer: Placed in orbit around the Earth and Moon

Solar orbit was the original objective. However, an excessively long burn altered the distance of closest approach to the moon, which prevented the S-IVB from achieving sufficient energy to leave the Earth-Moon system, so it entered an elliptical orbit around the Earth and Moon.
4. The cluster of craters surrounding the intended landing site, near the Surveyor III spacecraft, was called the Owl because of its appearance.

Answer: False

The cluster of craters was called the Snowman. Apollo 12 made a pinpoint landing about 600 feet from the Surveyor III spacecraft.
5. What year had Surveyor III landed on the moon?

Answer: 1967

Surveyor III was launched April 17, 1967 and landed on the moon on April 20, 1967. Before its operation ended on May 4, 1967, it took over 6,000 photographs and returned a large amount of data, including surface sample data.
6. During the first EVA of Apollo 12, which event did NOT occur?

Answer: Visit to Surveyor III

The second EVA included the traverse to Surveyor III. Pete Conrad and Alan Bean made two EVA's totalling 7 hours, 45 minutes.
7. Which of the following craters was NOT visited by Apollo 12?

Answer: Weird Crater

Weird Crater was visited by Apollo 14's crewmembers. Apollo 12's objectives included Head Crater, Bench Crater, Sharp Crater, Surveyor Crater, Halo Crater and Block Crater.
8. When Apollo 12's LM ascent stage impacted the moon, it became the first recorded artificial moonquake.

Answer: True

Although other spacecraft had impacted the moon, Apollo 12 deployed experiment packages which included a seismometer, so this was the first recorded moonquake. Some of the ALSEP experiments continued to return data until September 1977 when the network was turned off due to lack of funding.
9. The television camera was NOT one of the parts that Apollo 12 returned from Surveyor III.

Answer: False

Astronauts Conrad and Bean cut off the camera and the scoop along with a couple of other parts to return to Earth for analysis. The camera is on display at the National Air and Space Museum's "Exploring the Planets" gallery.
10. In which ocean did splashdown of Apollo 12 occur?

Answer: Pacific

Splashdown was in the Pacific Ocean on November 24, 1969 at 3:58 p.m. EST. The recovery ship was the USS Hornet.
