Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What time did launch of Apollo 17 occur?

Answer: 12:33 am EST

Apollo 17 launched on December 7, 1972 from Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39A, the only night launch of the program.
2. Who was originally in line to be the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 17?

Answer: Joe Engle

Gene Cernan, Ron Evans and Joe Engle were the backup crew for Apollo 14, which put them in line as prime crew of Apollo 17. Jack Schmitt, the only geologist of the scientist-astronauts in the program, was on the backup crew of Apollo 15, putting him in line to be on the prime crew of Apollo 18.

When Apollo 18 was cancelled, NASA was pressured to get one of the scientist-astronauts on the last moon-landing mission. Who better than a geologist to explore the moon, but what a disappointment for Joe Engle. Engle later flew in the space shuttle program.
3. Who were the three crew-members of Apollo 17?

Answer: Cernan, Evans and Schmitt

The crew consisted of Eugene Cernan, Commander; Ronald Evans, Command Module Pilot; and Harrison 'Jack' Schmitt, Lunar Module Pilot.
4. Which was NOT one of the places visited by Apollo 17 on the moon?

Answer: Smoky Mountain

Smoky Mountain was visited by John Young and Charlie Duke on Apollo 16. Sculptured Hills, Hole-in-the-Wall and North Massif were all sites visited by Cernan and Schmitt on Apollo 17.
5. At what crater was orange soil found?

Answer: Shorty Crater

Cernan and Schmitt also visited Camelot Crater and Van Serg Crater. Flag Crater was visited by Apollo 16. The soil found at Shorty Crater is orange because it contains volcanic glass believed to have formed 3.64 billion years ago.
6. Apollo 17 was one of two Apollo missions to deploy the Lunar Atmosphere Composition Experiment.

Answer: False

Apollo 17 was the only mission to deploy this experiment. The Lunar Atmosphere Composition Experiment(LACE) measured the composition and variation in the lunar atmosphere.
7. Which crew-member of Apollo 17 went on to become a US senator?

Answer: Jack Schmitt

Jack Schmitt began a six-year term as a senator from New Mexico in January 1977. I love this anecdote about Jack Schmitt in Andrew Chaikin's book, "A Man on the Moon". Jack Schmitt was known for his love of puns. One day during training for Apollo 17, Gene Cernan took a turn at punning.

He and Jack were training on the Lunar Rover mockup on a formation called an alluvial fan. Cernan hit a bump which dislodged Schmitt, who wasn't wearing his seat belt. Cernan looked at Schmitt on the ground, and said into his radio, "Well, the Schmitt just hit the fan."
8. After rendezvous and transfer, the lunar module ascent stage was impacted on the moon. How many seismic recording stations from previous Apollo missions registered the impact?

Answer: 4

The seismometers from Apollo 12, 14, 15 and 16 registered the impact.
9. How many space missions had the last man to walk on the moon flown prior to Apollo 17?

Answer: 2

Gene Cernan flew Gemini IX-A in 1966, and Apollo 10 in 1969, prior to commanding Apollo 17.
10. What was the name of the recovery ship for Apollo 17?

Answer: USS Ticonderoga

Splashdown occurred in the Pacific Ocean on December 19, 1972 at 2:24PM EST.
