Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many of the crew members of Apollo 13 were civilians at the time of the flight?

Answer: 2

Both Jack Swigert and Fred Haise were civilians. Commander Jim Lovell was a Captain in the US Navy.
2. The Command and Service Module, Odyssey, had what designation?

Answer: CSM-109

CM #109 and SM #109 were delivered to KSC on June 26, 1969.
3. What was the fate of Apollo 13's S-IVB rocket?

Answer: Lunar impact

Apollo 13's S-IVB was targeted to hit the moon so that vibrations from the impact could be recorded by Apollo 12's seismic recording station. The vibrations lasted for more than four hours. The S-IVB's of previous Apollo missions had been placed into solar orbit.
4. Oxygen tank no. 2 exploded in the Service Module of the Apollo 13 spacecraft, causing the moon landing to be aborted. For what Apollo mission had this oxygen tank been previously installed?

Answer: Apollo 10

The tank was removed from Apollo 10 for modification, and was dropped two inches during the removal. Another tank was installed on Apollo 10, and the exterior of the original tank inspected. Not knowing that an internal fill line had been damaged during the drop of the original tank, it was later installed on Apollo 13.

This damage led to the heaters being used to empty the tank during pre-flight testing. Due to incorrect voltage, the temperatures inside the tank increased to over 1000 degrees F, damaging the insulation on the wires in the tank.
5. Who was the CapCom at the time of the explosion?

Answer: Jack Lousma

Jack Lousma later flew on Skylab.
6. Of the manned Apollo missions, Apollo 13's LM, Aquarius, was the only one to burn up in earth's atmosphere.

Answer: False

Apollo 9's LM, Spider, also burned up in earth's atmosphere. Apollo 9 was an earth-orbit test of the Command and Service Modules, as well as the LM. Apollos 7 and 8 carried no LM's; Apollo 10's LM, Snoopy, was put into solar orbit; Apollo 11's LM, Eagle, was left in lunar orbit and eventually impacted the moon after the orbit decayed; and the LM's of Apollos 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17 all were impacted on the moon to record seismic vibrations.
7. Ken Mattingly was replaced on Apollo 13 by Jack Swigert because of his exposure to German measles. On what Apollo mission did Ken Mattingly later fly?

Answer: Apollo 16

The backup crew for Apollo 13, John Young, Charlie Duke and Ken Mattingly, became the prime crew for Apollo 16.
8. Apollo 13 crew member Jack Swigert was later elected to Congress, but died of cancer prior to being sworn in to office. What was Jack's home state where he won his election?

Answer: Colorado

Jack Swigert died on December 27, 1982.
9. In spite of the moon landing being aborted, Apollo 13 did complete some experiments. Which did they NOT complete?

Answer: Lunar Atmosphere Experiment

The Lunar Atmosphere Experiment was part of the ALSEP package which was to have been deployed on the moon, and therefore was not performed. The Atmospheric Electrical Phenomena experiment was conducted before and during launch as a result of the lightning strike experienced by Apollo 12. Seismic Detection of Third-Stage Lunar Impact was described in Q3. Earth Photography Applied to Geosynchronous Satellites was to aid in feasibility tests for satellites.
10. All three members of the support crew for Apollo 13 flew Skylab missions.

Answer: False

The support crew consisted of Jack Lousma, Vance Brand and William Pogue. Lousma flew on Skylab 2, and Pogue flew on Skylab 4. Vance Brand did not fly in the Skylab program, but was on the crew of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project.
