Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many of the Roundheads did Charles II not pardon?

Answer: 57

The Act of Indemnity of 1660 forgave all but the 57. Of those, only 30 were condemned to death but 13 were actually executed.
2. What dead person did Charles II hang after Charles came to power?

Answer: Cromwell

They also hanged his brother-in-law, who was also dead at the time. I guess it's the thought that counts.
3. 1660 began the Age of ____.

Answer: Oligarchy

This was when the titled and aristocracy ruled and lasted 170 years.
4. What religion/denomination was Charles II thought to have been?

Answer: Catholic

It wasn't quite clear if he was practicing and he was a religious moderate. If he didn't stay moderate, there was the chance that Parliament would have rebelled.
5. How much was Charles II's annual income (in pounds)?

Answer: 1.2 million

This is half of what Cromwell was taking when the country was bankrupt, but Charles I was able to survive on two-thirds this amount.
6. What was the first parliament known as?

Answer: Cavalier Parliament

They were determined not to let the crown become financially independent.
7. The plague happened in 1665-1666. But when did the London fire occur?

Answer: 1666

This was possibly one of the many reasons the plague stopped - the fire killed many of the rats which had carried the plague and 'disinfected' the city.
8. In 1670, with whom did Charles II sign a secret treaty?

Answer: Louis XIV

Louis agreed to pay Charles an annual income and would send troops to make Catholics safe, IF Charles agreed to convert to Catholicism when it was convenient.
9. When did Charles convert to Catholicism?

Answer: On his deathbed

Apparently, it was convenient for him at that time.
10. Charles II died with no issue in 1685. Who became the King of England upon his death?

Answer: James II
