Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Originally named Chebucto, this is the capital city of Nova Scotia.

Answer: Halifax

Halifax was founded in 1749. It became Halifax after its founding, in part due to the Earl of Halifax who was the British Lord of Trade and Plantations.
2. In the 20th century how many times did a Canadian team win the World Series in Major League Baseball?

Answer: 2

In back-to-back seasons, 1992-1993, the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series. In 1992 they beat the Atlanta Braves in 6 games. They repeated in the same fashion against the Philadelphia Phillies in 1993. The Montreal Expos didn't win a Series, although were well on their way in 1994 before the players went on strike. Could have been back-to-back-to-back years for Canada! Oh well.
3. How many people were Prime Minister more than once, non-consecutively?

Answer: 4

To start, our first Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald was in power from 1867 - 1873 and 1878 - 1891. Next was Arthur Meighen from 1920 - 1921 and 1926. Third we had William Lyon Mackenzie King from 1921 - 1926, 1926 - 1930, and 1935 - 1948. Lastly, Pierre Elliott Trudeau was in office from 1968 - 1979 and 1980 - 1984.
4. Who was the first, and only, female Prime Minister?

Answer: Kim Campbell

She is a member of the Progressive Conservative party and took over for Brian Mulroney in 1993. Mulroney resigned in 1993 leaving Campbell with many problems, including the Goods and Services Tax (GST), an expensive arms deal, a $5 billion deal to buy helicopters, and also increasing unemployment. Campbell only had from Mulroney's resignation in June until October to prepare for an election.

She had only had 5 years of political experience at national level and was 46 when she became Prime Minister.

She resigned as the leader of the Conservatives in December 1993. Her term lasted a little over four months. She is the first woman Prime Minister and also the first native British Columbian Prime Minister.
5. Nunavut is the most recent territory in the Canadian federation. When was it created as a territory?

Answer: April 1, 1999

Nunavut, Canada's lowest populated region, joined the federation in 1999, 50 years after Newfoundland joined. The population is approximately 85% Inuit. Although not heavily populated, Nunavut covers 1.9 million square kilometres, which accounts for about 1/5 of Canada.

It is located in Northern Canada, bordered by Manitoba to the south and the Northwest Territories to the West. It includes territory north of Ontario and Quebec separated from those provinces by Hudson Bay and has many islands bordered on the East by the Baffin Sea.
6. What is the largest lake located entirely in Canada?

Answer: Great Bear Lake

Great Bear Lake is found in the Northwest Territories. It is home to many World Record lake trout, including one caught in 2001 that was weighed at 74 pounds! In order, Great Bear is 31400 sq. km; Great Slave in Northwest Territories is 28500 sq. km; Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba is 24200 sq. km; and Lake Athabasca in Saskatchewan is 7800 sq. km in area.
7. How many time zones does Canada have?

Answer: 6

There are a total of 6 time zones in Canada. Greenwich time -3:30hrs is Newfoundland time; GT -4:00hrs is Atlantic time; GT -5:00hrs is Eastern time; GT -6:00hrs is Central time; GT -7:00hrs is Mountain time; and GT -8:00hrs is Pacific time. In 1878, Sir Sanford Fleming, a Canadian, proposed the Earth be divided into 24 time zones where each time zone had a width of 15 degrees of longitude.

This is due to the fact that the Earth rotates once in 24 hours, and 360 degrees of longitude giving 15 degrees per hour.

This system was officially adopted in 1884 in Canada, the US and many other countries, too, and at this time the Prime Meridian and Greenwich Mean Time were determined. Currently, most nations use some variation of Fleming's time zones.
8. When was the current Canadian flag adopted?

Answer: 1965

In 1965 the current flag, consisting of 2 red bars with a white centre and a red maple leaf in the centre, was adopted as the flag of Canada. Before that, the Red Ensign was used, that is, the Union Jack (British flag) in the top left hand corner on a red ground (and Canadian coat of arms in bottom right).
9. When was the current national anthem proclaimed for Canada?

Answer: July 1, 1980

"O Canada", our national anthem, was sung for the first time in 1880 but was only proclaimed as our national anthem on Canada Day in 1980. It only took 100 years to see how good a song it was! Before this, Canadians sang "God Save The Queen/King".
10. At which census did the population of Canada first exceed 35 million?

Answer: 2016

The largest cities in Canada in order were Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. The population at the 2016 census was 35.151m (2011 was 33.476m).
