Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1808, American writer William Jenks predicted that a war between the northern and southern states would erupt. According to him, when would that war begin?

Answer: 1856

He claimed that the war would begin in 1856, while the Civil War actually began just 5 years later (1861)! He also said that "The northern states will fight the southern states and the fight will be about slavery ... The northern states will defeat the exhausted southern states in a war that lasts four years ... After the war we will have a new United States of America." Spooky, huh?
2. The northern Americans were called Yankees, which comes from the Dutch phrase 'Jan Kees' meaning John Cheese?

Answer: True

The British settlers made fun of the Dutch people living in New York and called them John Cheese, because the Dutch were making a whole lot of cheese. The name stuck, and John Cheese became Jan Kees... Yankees!
3. Abraham Lincoln dreamed of a world in which black and white people would be equal.

Answer: False

Abraham Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery but still regarded white people superior. He once said that "I am not, and never have been in favor of equality of white and black races. I am not, and never have been, in favor of letting Negroes have government posts or marry white people." And you thought that Lincoln was a supporter of black people...
4. When did General Robert E Lee die?

Answer: 12 October 1870

He died on 12 October 1870 at Virginia. Amazingly he was buried without his boots, although he was dressed in his uniform. Why? A flood had destroyed the existing coffins and only a small one had been rescued. So in order for General E Lee to fit, his boots had to be left out of the coffin.
5. After the Battle of Gettysburg, what was the largest amount of bullets found loaded in a rifle?

Answer: 24

Amazingly, the rifle had been loaded with 24(!) bullets! The soldier carrying that particular rifle must have been a gun expert!
6. One of the games that was played in civil war camps was...

Answer: cricket

They even played cards, boxing, baseball, cock fighting and louse racing! Doesn't sound much like a war camp to me!
7. Soldiers had their own slang during the war. What did 'absquatulate' mean?

Answer: to run away from battle

Other words and phrases that were being used were 'sinks' (toilets), 'chirk' (cheerful) and 'get a brick in the hat' (to get drunk).
8. Which of the following was a Yankee invention and was first used in the Civil War?

Answer: instant coffee

It was given to Yankee soldiers and they hated it!
9. How many Yankee soldiers were sent to the Reb camp at Andersonville?

Answer: 41,000

41,000 soldiers were sent as prisoners at that camp and 13,000 of them died before the war was over.
10. And finally, here's an easy question. Who murdered Abraham Lincoln?

Answer: Booth

Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head by actor John Wilkes Booth while he was watching a play in the theater on 14 April 1865, less than a week after the Rebels has surrendered and the war was finally over.
