Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What airline operated the plane that was hijacked by D B Cooper in 1971?

Answer: Northwest Orient

The Northwest Orient flight was a Boeing 727 originating in Portland, OR with Seattle as its destination.
2. What name was used by the hijacker when he bought the ticket for the flight?

Answer: Dan Cooper

The hijacker bought his ticket at the Portland airport on the day of the flight for $20. The name "D. B. Cooper" was disseminated by the news media in error, and that is the name that stuck.
3. How much money did hijacker D B Cooper extort from the airline?

Answer: $200,000

In 1971, the average salary in the US was about $6,500 per year, so $200,000 was a small fortune then.
He requested only $20 bills, and the serial number of each bill was recorded by the authorities before the money was delivered to the plane.
4. What weapon did D B Cooper show to the crew of the hijacked flight?

Answer: A bomb

Cooper told a stewardess that he had a bomb. When she asked to see it, he opened his briefcase to show her what appeared to be an explosive device. He then made his demands.
5. What equipment was demanded by D B Cooper as part of his hijacking attempt?

Answer: Four parachutes

Because he asked for multiple parachutes, the authorities feared that he would force an innocent party to jump with him. This improved his likelihood of getting properly packed chutes.

Prior to making his jump, Cooper opened two of the chutes to see if they were operable, and he used parts from one to tie the ransom money to his body. He then wore the other two parachutes. One of the chutes that Cooper actually used was marked for training purposes only and was not fully functional.
6. What act of humanity did hijacker D B Cooper perform at the Seattle-Tacoma airport after his ransom demands were met?

Answer: He released all the passengers.

Once the money and parachutes were delivered to the plane, he let all the passengers go, along with some of the flight crew members. No one was injured during the hijacking.
7. How did D B Cooper make the escape that evaded law enforcement authorities?

Answer: He jumped from the back exit of the plane while in flight.

Less than an hour after take-off from SeaTac, Cooper opened the back hatch of the plane and lowered the stairs down from the tail. No one witnessed his jump because the flight crew were all in the cockpit, as directed by the hijacker.

Seven years after the hijacking, a placard of instructions on how to lower the back stairs was found on the ground in Washington state and was confirmed as having come from the hijacked 727.
8. What city did hijacker D B Cooper identify to authorities as his destination?

Answer: Mexico City, Mexico

Cooper gave the airline instructions to load enough fuel for the plane to make it nonstop to Mexico City. After Cooper jumped from the plane, the pilot actually landed it in Reno, NV.
9. After making his hijacking demands, what unusual act did D B Cooper perform toward the flight attendant in his section at the rear of the plane?

Answer: He tipped her for his drinks.

Cooper paid his $2 drink tab and insisted that the stewardess keep an $18 tip even after he made his hijacking intentions known.
10. What hard evidence was discovered by a camper in 1980 that related to the 1971 plane hijacking pulled off by D B Cooper?

Answer: $5800 in weathered $20 bills

Nine years after the hijacking, the money was found still bundled together near the Columbia River in the state of Washington. The bills were positively identified via serial numbers.

The serial numbers of all the bills were published and rewards were offered to anyone who turned in one of the notes. However, none of the other bills paid to Cooper have ever shown up in circulation.
