Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What battle delayed the German advance long enough to throw the tight timetable of the Schlieffen Plan for conquering France out significantly?

Answer: Liège

The Belgians held up the German advance with their ring of forts and slowed them down just long enough for the Allies to eventually stop them at the Marne. The German plan was based on several assumptions which turned out to be false. One of the most important of these was the belief that there would be little resistance from Belgium.
2. Germany first used poison gas in the First Battle of Ypres.

Answer: False

Germany used it at the second battle in 1915. The presence of the gas resulted in a large gap in the Allied lines, but the Germans weren't fully aware of this until it was too late for them to exploit it.
3. Which British general was ultimately responsible for the military effort that brought down the Ottoman Empire?

Answer: Edmund Allenby

General Allenby captured Jerusalem and Damascus before steadily driving the Turks to within miles of their own border with Arab help. British efforts to persuade the Arab peoples of the region to turn against the Ottomans proved to be a decisive advantage.
4. At what Greek city were the Allies bogged down against the Bulgarians until late 1918?

Answer: Salonika

The two sides were stuck there until a well co-ordinated offensive by Allied General Franchet d'Esperey knocked Bulgaria out of the war. It is worth noting that both sides were on technically neutral territory until Greece entered the war in 1917.
5. What two battles on the Western Front completely dominated 1916?

Answer: Verdun and the Somme

The French successfully held on to Verdun against a fierce German campaign, thanks in large part to the stalemated British offensive on the Somme that took pressure off the fortress city.
6. The French Army was sidelined as an effective fighting force for 1917.

Answer: True

Much of the French Army mutinied after the soldiers were fed into a foolhardy assault on German lines by General Neville. The mutiny was kept secret by the Allies very well. The Germans were never aware of it.
7. What significant event occurred in April 1917 that would eventually turn the tide of war against the Central Powers?

Answer: U.S. declared war on Germany

Thanks to unrestricted submarine warfare and the Zimmermann Telegram, the United States had finally had enough of Germany's antics and declared war against them. It would take until the late spring of 1918 for the American Army to arrive in force.
8. The German spring offensive of 1918 that was designed to knock France out of the war was stopped at what battle?

Answer: Second Marne

The Germans got to within 40-50 miles of Paris before once again being repulsed at the Marne, thanks to tiring out their army, lack of supplies, and American reinforcement of the Allied army at the Marne.
9. What was the name of the Allied campaign that finally forced Germany to surrender and ended WWI?

Answer: Hundred Days' Offensive

Beginning with British victory at Amiens on August 8th, the Allies drove Germany almost completely out of France. Some German troops actually celebrated not having to go through the misery of war any longer.

However, the senior German military (and others) almost immediately started the 'stab-in-the-back legend' - the false claim that Germany had not been defeated in battle, but maliciously undermined on the home front by assorted subversives. Ludendorff and Hindenburg made a point of not being present when the armistice was signed but barked out orders from the end of a telephone line to mainly civilian negotiators and signatories.
10. What day marked the end of the war?

Answer: November 11, 1918

The armistice between the Allies and Germany went into effect on November 11 at 11 AM, finally bringing an end to the conflict. Unfortunately, the peace would not last, but the Allies did eventually stop Hitler in 1945.
