Answer: Ronald Reagan

Despite being elected from Illinois, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant and Barack Obama were not born in the state. Abraham Lincoln was born in Hardin County, Kentucky; Ulysses S. Grant in Point Pleasant, Ohio and Barack Obama in Honolulu, Hawaii. Ronald Reagan is the only native, as he was born in Tampico, Illinois.
2. On December 3rd 1854 more than 20 gold miners at Ballarat, Australia were killed by state troopers in an uprising over mining licences. In what state is Ballarat?

Answer: Victoria

Ballarat is about 70 miles NW of Melbourne in Victoria. The uprising is known as the Eureka Stockade and is claimed by many to be the birth of Australian democracy.
3. On December 3rd 1857, the author Joseph Conrad was born in Poland. Which of the following novels did he NOT write?

Answer: The Heart of the Matter

'The Heart of the Matter' was written by Graham Greene and published in 1948. 'Heart of Darkness', first published in 1899, is set in the Congo. Joseph Conrad is regarded as a master of the English language, despite not having learnt to speak it fluently until he was in his twenties. Apparently he never lost his strong Polish accent.
4. On December 3rd 1919 a French impressionist painter (born in 1841) died. Famous works include 'Luncheon of the Boating Party' and 'The Theatre Box'. One of his sons is a famous film director. Who is the painter?

Answer: Pierre-Auguste Renoir

All four artists are well known as French Impressionists. Dégas is famous for his painting and sculptures of ballet dancers. One of Manet's most famous pictures is 'Le déjeuner sur l'herbe' ('The Luncheon on the Grass'). Monet's 'Water Lilies' is well known.

His garden at Giverny is open to the public. Try Googling any of these artists and looking at the pictures. It is well worth while.
5. On December 3rd 1948 one of the people who formed Black Sabbath was born. Who was he?

Answer: Ozzy Osbourne

Despite being one of the founder members of Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne was sacked from the band in 1979. Ian Gillan did vocals for Deep Purple. Judas Priest is the name of a band, not a person. Robert Plant is a rock singer and songwriter, famous for his membership of Led Zeppelin.
6. On December 3rd 1964 police arrested over 800 students following their takeover of and sit-in at the administration building of which American university?

Answer: University of California, Berkeley

The late 1960s and early 1970s saw many student protests against U.S. military involvement in Vietnam. On three occasions during this period, Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel declared a state of emergency at the University of Maryland and sent in National Guardsmen to restore and maintain order.

In 1970 the Ohio Army National Guard fired at students during a war protest on campus at Kent State University, killing four and wounding nine. Protests erupted at Columbia University in 1968 when students discovered links between the university and those supporting the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War. (There were also widespread student protests in western Europe, too).
7. On December 3rd 1967 the world's first heart transplant operation was performed in which city?

Christiaan Barnard carried out the operation at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. The recipient, Louis Washkansky, survived 18 days.
8. On December 3rd 1976 an assassination attempt was made on which major musical figure?

9. On December 3rd 1984 one of the worst industrial disasters in history took place where?

Answer: Bhopal

A leak from a Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, killed more than 3,800 people and injured 150,000-600,000. Galveston is known for the hurricane that struck it in 1900. A reactor at Chernobyl Nuclear Power exploded on April 26 1986. The town was evacuated after the incident and is still uninhabited. On July 10 1976 in Seveso, Italy, storage vessels at the ICMESA chemical plant broke and released several kilograms of dioxin into the atmosphere. Thousands of farm animals and pets died or were destroyed.

It is thought that not a single human died as a direct result of the accident.
10. On December 3rd 2007 who was sworn in as the 26th Prime Minister of Australia?

Answer: Kevin Rudd

Kevin Rudd was elected Leader of the Labor party in December 2006 and proceeded to lead his party to victory in the general election the following year. Bob Hawke, Paul Keating and John Howard were, respectively, the 23rd, 24th and 25th Prime Ministers.
