A specialist unit, Australian Army Training Team Vietnam was set up in 1962, in which the first involvement was sending 30 army advisors to Vietnam. On arrival these 30 specialists were dispersed among the United States advisers and spread all over South Vietnam with their headquarters in Saigon. They worked as advisers only on tactical, jungle warfare, signals and engineering and had no direct involvement in any combat.

Instead of being greeted by gunfire and explosions they were greeted with flowers, banners and smiling people. Karch was photographed looking very unhappy with a garland of flowers draped around his neck. The L1A1 Self Loading Rifle (SLR) was made under licence at the Lithgow Small Arms Factory in Australia and was based on the Belgian FN. The SLR was a semi-automatic, gas operated weapon that fired the NATO 7.62mm round from a 20 round magazine. It was preferred over the M16 by Australian troops because of its greater stopping power (usually one hit - one kill). It could be converted to automatic fire (by grinding down the safety sear) but became hard to control. Madam Nhu, born Tran Le Xuan, was the wife of President Diem's brother, Ngo Dinh Nhu. Because Diem wasn't married she was a surrogate 'first lady'. She was very arrogant, ultra conservative on social and moral issues and was given the name 'Dragon Lady'. She issued several decrees banning divorce, dancing, and beauty contests. She even had her own paramilitary called the Women's Solidarity Movement. She was in the US during the coup of 1963 after which she went into exile in Rome.
