Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which year was the Battle of Magenta fought?

Answer: 1859

The battle of Magenta, a little town in northern Italy not so far from Milano, was fought on June 4, 1859, during the Second War of Italian Independence, when the French and Sardinian-Piemontese forces defeated the Austrians.
2. The battle of Solferino occurred before the battle of Magenta.

Answer: False

These battles were fought the same year, but the battle of Magenta was on the 4th June 1859, while the battle of Solferino (a little town close to Mantova, in Lombardy) occurred on the 24th June 1859. It was a very bloody battle which put an end to the Second War of Italian Independence and contributed to the unification of Italy.
3. In which year was the Battle of Novara during the first Italian War of Independence ?

Answer: 1849

The Battle of Novara (March 23, 1849) was fought at Novara, not so far from Milano, in the second phase of the First War of Italian Independence, when Charles Albert of Savoy, the king of Sardinia-Piedmont, hoped to defeat the Austrians who had routed him at the Battle of Custoza in 1848.

But his hopes were frustrated as the battle of Novara was unfortunately a new defeat which forced Charles Albert to abdicate in favour of his son Victor Emmanuel II.
4. In which year was the Battle of Pavia?

Answer: 1525

The Battle of Pavia in northern Italy, on the Ticino River, occurred in 1525, when Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, not only defeated Francis I, King of France, but also took him prisoner. The Battle of Pavia forms part of the so-called Italian Wars which, starting from 1494, afflicted Italy that was divided into several rival states, thus being hostage to European powers, principally France and Spain. On that occasion Francis I wrote to his mother this famous phrase: "All is lost save honour".
5. When was the second Battle of Custoza fought?

Answer: 1866

The second Battle of Custoza was fought and lost on June 24, 1866 , during the Third War of Italian Independence, while the first Battle of Custoza, in Northern Italy, near Verona, was the scene of another Austrian victory over Sardinia in 1848, during the First War of Italian Independence.
6. In which year were the battles of Calatafimi and Milazzo fought?

Answer: 1860

The battles of Calatafimi (May 15, 1860) and Milazzo (July 20,1860) were fought between the Mille expedition of Garibaldi and the Bourbon army, in Sicily. Garibaldi's Expedition of the Thousand was a volunteer force that had sailed from Genova, in northern Italy, to free Southern Italy and Sicily from Bourbon rule.

This expedition had a happy ending thanks to military victories of Giuseppe Garibaldi and permitted the union of southern Italy and Sicily with the north in 1861 under Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy, first king of united Italy.
7. There was also a battle of Milazzo in ancient Roman history.

Answer: True

In the First Punic War (264-241 BC) the Romans wanted to wrest command of the sea from Carthage. This naval battle at Mylae (modern Milazzo, NE Sicily) was Rome's first naval triumph.

9. When was the battle of Lepanto fought?

Answer: 1571

The Battle of Lepanto, in the Corinthian Gulf, Greece, occurred on October 7, 1571 between Ottoman naval forces and the naval power of Venice, Spain and the Pope, aided by some minor contributions from Genova and other Italian states, as well as by the Knights of Malta.

The European fleet commanded by Don Juan D'Austria defeated the Ottomans so that they lost their control on seas, especially on the western part of the Mediterranean Sea.
