Answer: Marcus Claudius Marcellus

After he annihilated a massive Roman army at Cannae, Hannibal attempted to seize the town of Nola. He was brought to a stalemate by the impressive general and would face two more such results in the next two years.
2. 212 BC proved to be an eventful year for Hannibal. He fought three battles, won, and destroyed the Roman army in two battles. Which was the only battle in which the Romans escaped?

Answer: First Battle of Capua

In this battle Hannibal routed a Roman army led by the two consuls Flaccus and Pulcher. His cavalry defeated the Roman cavalry but just as he was about to close in on them reinforcements arrived and the Romans escaped.
3. Hannibal's brother Hasdrubal Barca invaded Italy. He was defeated and killed at the Battle of the Metaurus. When did the battle take place?

Answer: 207 BC

At Metaurus Hasdrubal faced great odds, with many deserting him and his Gallic soldiers getting drunk. Outnumbered by the Roman army, his mixed army was routed when the Romans crashed into their flanks.

A tribune from the Roman right then ordered 20 maniples to turn around and crash into the Macedonian right, which was focused on charging at the retreating Romans. The Greeks were destroyed.

Answer: Galatian Gauls

While the name Olympus the Greeks would seem like the answer, but in fact it was the Gauls who were defeated.

Answer: 171 BC - Battle of Callinicus

In 179 BC, Philip of Macedon died. His son, Perseus, was an ambitious king and expanded his army. Knowing that he threatened the Roman control in Greece, Rome sent an army under Publius Licinius Crassus, who was defeated by Perseus at Callinicus.

Answer: 3 years - 2 battles

Starting in 171 BC with a Roman defeat, the second and last engagement happened three years later in 168 BC, when Rome decisively defeated and captured Perseus.

In 149 BC a Roman army arrived at Carthage and demanded destruction of the city. Carthage refused and locked itself in the castle, building a huge arsenal. The Romans eventually broke through and killed almost 500000 defenders and civillians.
